Company history

DSM FIRMENICH AG was formed from two much older businesses with roots in Switzerland and the Netherlands. Firmenich began in 1895, when scientist Philippe Chuit and businessman Martin Naef established a perfumery business in the garage of Charles Firmenich in Geneva.[46] DSM was established in 1902 as the state-owned Dutch State Mines in Limburg, originally to mine coal, and it had already begun moving into chemicals by 1919 with the opening of a coking plant.[47][48] In the 1930s, Firmenich expanded into Paris and the United States, and in 1939 its first head of research, Leopold Ružička, was a joint winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.[49][50]

Over the 20th century, DSM diversified into chemicals and petrochemicals; its last mine was decommissioned in 1973, and the company was privatized in 1989.[47][51] In the following years, DSM reshaped its portfolio through divestments and acquisitions including Gist-brocades, Catalytica, Roche Vitamins & Fine Chemicals, and NeoResins, while shifting toward life sciences and later health, nutrition, and sustainable living.[52][47] Firmenich, meanwhile, continued to develop flavor and fragrance molecules and expanded its naturals and sustainability capabilities, including establishing its Naturals Center of Excellence in France in 2005-2007.[50] On 31 May 2022, DSM and Firmenich announced a merger of equals, which was effected on 8 May 2023 to create DSM-Firmenich.[53][54] [46]
