DoorDash, Inc.

Overview

DoorDash, Inc., founded in 2013, is a local commerce company whose mission is to “grow and empower local economies.” It operates online marketplaces that connect local merchants, consumers, and Dashers, with its main offerings centered on the DoorDash Marketplace and Wolt Marketplace. Beyond those marketplaces, DoorDash also provides a Commerce Platform that includes white-label delivery and other tools that help merchants manage online ordering and fulfillment.[1]

The company is defined by on-demand local delivery and merchant-enablement services, with local food delivery logistics described as its largest business category, while its platform also supports a broad selection of merchants and products for consumers. DoorDash’s marketplaces operate in over 30 countries, and the company generated about $10.7 billion in revenue in 2024 and had over 23,700 employees worldwide at year-end, indicating substantial global scale.[6] [2]

Products & services

DoorDash’s core customer-facing products are its DoorDash and Wolt marketplaces, where consumers use apps and websites to discover and buy goods from local merchants. Within those marketplaces, DoorDash sells merchant services including customer acquisition, demand generation, order fulfillment, merchandising, payment processing, customer support, and advertising products for merchants and consumer packaged goods companies. It also offers the DashPass and Wolt+ membership programs, which reduce delivery and service fees and add membership benefits; as of December 31, 2024, DoorDash reported more than 22 million DashPass and Wolt+ members. The marketplaces operate in more than 30 countries and account for the vast majority of the company’s revenue.[3]

DoorDash also sells merchant-enablement tools through its Commerce Platform. Its main product in this category is Drive, including DoorDash Drive On-Demand and Wolt Drive, which are white-label delivery-fulfillment services that let merchants fulfill orders generated through their own channels; Drive generates the majority of Commerce Platform revenue. Other Commerce Platform capabilities include online ordering, branded mobile apps, tableside order-and-pay, and customer-support tools. In earlier company disclosures, DoorDash identified branded products in this suite including DoorDash Storefront, a turnkey branded online-ordering solution that lets merchants offer e-commerce without building in-house engineering or logistics capabilities, and Bbot, which provides digital ordering and payment tools for in-store and online channels.[11][12] [3]

Geographic presence

DoorDash’s marketplaces operate in over 30 countries, including the United States, giving the company a broad international footprint while remaining heavily centered on its domestic market [4]. The company’s principal executive offices are in San Francisco, California, and it is headquartered there; as of year-end 2024, it also leased office, retail, warehouse, and distribution facilities in multiple U.S. and international locations, with office lease commitments of approximately 240,000 square feet [13].

DoorDash reports geographic revenue based on the merchant address, or for membership products, the consumer address [16]. In 2024, it generated $9.403 billion of revenue in the United States and $1.319 billion internationally, or about 87.7% and 12.3% of total revenue, respectively; the 2023 split was $7.781 billion U.S. and $854 million international, and the 2022 split was $6.251 billion U.S. and $332 million international [17]. No individual country outside the United States represented 10% or more of consolidated revenue in the periods presented, indicating that its international business is spread across multiple markets rather than concentrated in a single foreign country [18]. [4]

Business segments

DoorDash reports a single reportable operating segment. The chief executive officer is identified as the chief operating decision maker and reviews financial information on a consolidated basis for operating decisions, resource allocation, and performance evaluation; as a result, DoorDash states that it operates in one reportable segment, so effectively 100% of reported revenue and operating results are presented within that single segment.[19]

Within that consolidated structure, DoorDash describes two main business lines: its Marketplaces and its Commerce Platform. The Marketplaces include the DoorDash Marketplace and Wolt Marketplace, compete on selection, convenience, quality, affordability, and service, and also include the DashPass and Wolt+ membership programs; DoorDash says the Marketplaces account for the vast majority of its revenue.[3] The Commerce Platform is a suite of services that helps merchants grow, run, and operate their businesses on their own channels; it includes Drive white-label delivery fulfillment, which DoorDash says generates the majority of Commerce Platform revenue, along with tools for online ordering, branded mobile apps, tableside order-and-pay, and customer support.[5][21]

DoorDash does not disclose an official revenue percentage split between Marketplaces and Commerce Platform. The main quantified breakdown it provides is geographic rather than segment-based: 2024 revenue was $9.403 billion in the United States and $1.319 billion internationally, which is approximately 87.7% and 12.3% of total revenue, respectively.[22][17] [19]

Company history

DoorDash was incorporated in 2013 as Palo Alto Delivery Inc., and DoorDash’s filings identify Tony Xu, Andy Fang, and Stanley Tang as co-founders. The service officially launched in Palo Alto in June 2013 under the original name Palo Alto Delivery, before the company changed its name to DoorDash, Inc. in 2015.[23]

In 2018, DoorDash introduced DashPass, a subscription program that expanded its consumer offering. In 2019, the company agreed to acquire Caviar in July and completed the transaction in October; that same year, it launched in Melbourne, Australia, marking an early step in its expansion outside the U.S.[26]

DoorDash went public in December 2020, pricing its initial public offering at $102 per share and beginning trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol DASH. It later completed the acquisition of Wolt on June 1, 2022, a major deal that broadened the company’s international reach.[30][31] [23]
