Business segments
Dolby Laboratories reports one operating and reportable segment, rather than separate business segments. That segment comprises the consolidated Dolby business: most revenue comes from licensing audio and video technologies to electronics manufacturers, while a smaller portion comes from premium audio and video offerings for cinema exhibitors. On the FY2025 annual-revenue basis, the single segment accounts for 100% of consolidated revenue, or $1,349.130 million. A newer FY2026 third-quarter filing continued to describe Dolby as a single reportable segment.[28][29]
Dolby also discloses revenue categories that are not reportable segments. In FY2025, licensing revenue was $1,248.017 million, approximately 92.5% of total revenue, while products and services revenue was $101.113 million, approximately 7.5%. Licensing includes branded technologies such as Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision as well as patent licensing; products and services include cinema hardware and related services. The company does not report separate segment revenue for these activities, and Dolby Cinema box-office shares are classified as licensing revenue.[30][3][31][32][33][34][35] [28][29][30][30][30][3][31][32][33][34][35]
Company history
Ray Dolby founded Dolby Laboratories in London in 1965, initially developing noise-reduction technology for audio recording. In 1968, Dolby B brought the company’s noise-reduction technology to the consumer-audio market, helping establish its place in tape recording.[36][37]
Dolby expanded into cinema sound in the 1970s: its technology was used in the feature film *Callan* in 1974, followed by Dolby Stereo in 1975. The company moved its world headquarters from London to San Francisco in 1976.[38][39] In 1992, *Batman Returns* became the first film released in Dolby Digital, a major step in the company’s expansion into digital cinema sound.[40]
Dolby completed its initial public offering in 2005, and its shares began trading on the New York Stock Exchange as DLB.[41] In 2014, it agreed to acquire Doremi Labs, expanding its digital-cinema capabilities.[42] In 2026, Marc Whitten became president and CEO, succeeding Kevin Yeaman.[43] [36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43]
