Overview

Cummins Inc., founded in 1919, is a global power solutions company that designs, manufactures, distributes and services diesel, natural gas, electric and hybrid powertrains and related components for customers worldwide, primarily serving OEMs, distributors, dealers and other end markets [1][2]. Its product portfolio spans engines, filtration, aftertreatment, turbochargers, fuel systems, valvetrain and control technologies, axles, drivelines, brakes, suspension systems, electric power generation systems, batteries, electrified power systems, hydrogen production technologies and fuel cell products [1].

The company’s operations are organized into five core segments: Components, Engine, Distribution, Power Systems and Accelera, which together cover commercial vehicle and industrial power applications, power generation, service and repair, and newer zero-emission technologies such as batteries, fuel cells and electrolyzers [3]. Cummins supports this business through approximately 450 distributor locations and more than 19,000 certified dealer locations across about 190 countries and territories, giving it a broad global presence [1]. Its stated mission is to make people’s lives better by powering a more prosperous world [4].

As a broad indicator of scale, Cummins reported 2024 net sales of $34.1 billion and had approximately 75,500 employees worldwide at December 31, 2023 [5][6]. [1]

Products & services

Cummins’ products span engine systems, power generation equipment, powertrain components and newer zero-emission technologies. Its portfolio includes axles, drivelines, brakes, suspension systems, aftertreatment systems, turbochargers, fuel systems, valvetrain technologies, automated transmissions and electronics for commercial diesel and natural-gas applications; engines of 15 liters and smaller; larger industrial engines of 16 liters and above; generator sets and alternators; and electrified products such as batteries, fuel cells, electric powertrains and hydrogen-production technologies.[7] Cummins has also said it is rolling out its HELM platform across the B, X10 and X15 engine families, designed so customers can use advanced diesel or alternative fuels including natural gas and hydrogen.[8]

Named products on current product pages include the X15 Efficiency Series heavy-duty diesel engine, rated at 400-500 hp and 1,450-1,850 lb-ft of torque and certified to EPA 2024 standards, and the X15N, a 15-liter natural-gas engine for heavy-duty and long-haul applications that runs on natural gas and renewable natural gas and is rated at 400-500 hp and 1,450-1,850 lb-ft.[9][10] Cummins also markets the B6.7 Octane gasoline engine, rated at 200-300 hp and 600-660 lb-ft, positioned as a medium-duty gasoline offering built on the B6.7 platform.[11][12] In power generation, the QSK95 commercial generator set is offered for 50/60 Hz applications with 2,500-3,000 kW prime power, 2,680-3,500 kW standby power and up to 3,350 kW data-center continuous power.[13] In zero-emission products, Accelera offers the HyLYZER 1000 PEM electrolyzer system, with hydrogen production of about 1,000 Nm3/h or roughly 2,160 kg/day, the FCE300 fuel-cell engine with 300 kW output, 55% peak efficiency on a heavy-duty truck cycle and durability up to 20,000 hours, and battery energy storage systems ranging from 211 kWh to 2,280 kWh using LFP batteries and liquid cooling.[14]

Cummins’ service offerings are tied closely to its equipment base. Its distribution operations wholesale engines, generator sets and service parts and provide service, repair and OEM support globally, while its service network offers dealer/distributor access, preventive maintenance, parts support, product quotes, service consultations, connected diagnostics, over-the-air programming, warranty claim support and ReCon remanufactured components built to factory-controlled specifications.[7] For 2024, management cited segment revenues of about $11.7 billion in Engine, $11.7 billion in Components, $11.4 billion in Distribution, $6.4 billion in Power Systems and $414 million in Accelera, against total company revenue of $34.1 billion.[23] [7]

Geographic presence

Cummins has a broad global operating footprint, serving customers through about 450 wholly owned, joint venture and independent distributor locations and more than 19,000 Cummins-certified dealer locations across about 190 countries and territories. In its reporting structure, the Distribution segment is organized into seven geographic regions: North America, Asia Pacific, Europe, China, Africa and Middle East, India, and Latin America. On a consolidated basis, 2023 net sales were concentrated in the United States at $19.3 billion, or about 56.7% of total net sales, with China contributing $3.1 billion (about 9.1%), India $1.7 billion (about 4.9%), and other international markets $10.0 billion (about 29.3%).[24]

Within the Distribution segment, 2023 sales were led by North America at $7.054 billion, or about 69.2% of segment sales, followed by Asia Pacific at $1.091 billion (10.7%), Europe at $0.848 billion (8.3%), China at $0.424 billion (4.2%), Africa and Middle East at $0.294 billion (2.9%), India at $0.264 billion (2.6%), and Latin America at $0.224 billion (2.2%). Cummins’ facility footprint includes U.S. sites in Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas, as well as operations in Belgium, China, India, Mexico and the United Kingdom. The company also has manufacturing and distribution joint ventures in markets including China, India, Chile and Peru, and it employed approximately 75,500 people worldwide at the end of 2023.[27] [24]

Business segments

Cummins officially reports five business segments: Engine, Components, Distribution, Power Systems, and Accelera. The Engine segment centers on diesel and natural-gas engines and related parts for on-highway and industrial/off-highway applications. Components covers powertrain-related products such as aftertreatment, turbochargers, fuel systems, valvetrain, controls, air handling, axles, drivelines, brakes, suspension, and related technologies. Distribution is the company’s sales, parts, service, and aftermarket support network. Power Systems focuses on power generation and industrial power equipment, including generator sets and integrated power systems. Accelera is the zero-emissions segment, covering batteries, ePowertrain systems, fuel cells, electrolyzers, and related decarbonization technologies.[3]

Using Cummins’ 2023 operating-segment sales table as an approximate mix of segment contribution, Components represented about 39% of total segment sales, Engine about 34%, Distribution about 30%, Power Systems about 17%, and Accelera about 1%. These percentages are rounded and can sum to more than 100% because the segment table includes intersegment sales before eliminations.[37] [3]

Company history

Cummins was founded in Columbus, Indiana on February 3, 1919, by Clessie Cummins with financial backing from William G. Irwin, and its first engine, the 6-horsepower HVID, was produced in April 1919.[38][6] The company first traded publicly in 1947.[6] In the early 1930s, Cummins used high-profile demonstrations to promote diesel technology, including Clessie Cummins’ 1930 drive from Indianapolis to New York in a diesel-powered Packard, and in 1933 Cummins-powered Kenworth trucks were introduced as the first American production diesel trucks.[39][40]

Cummins continued to build its reputation through engineering milestones such as the 1952 Indianapolis 500, where the Cummins Diesel Special won the pole with the first turbocharged diesel entered in the race.[41] It then expanded internationally, forming a joint venture in India with Kirloskar in 1962 and developing an engine partnership with Dongfeng in China that dates to 1986.[42][43] In 2001, the company changed its name from Cummins Engine Company to Cummins Inc.[44] [38]
