Products & services

Crown Holdings’ products include aluminum and steel beverage cans and ends, including slim and sleek formats, with expanded printing and decorating options. It also makes metal food cans and ends, aerosol cans and ends, and metal closures in assorted shapes and sizes for food, personal-care, household, and industrial products. Crown’s global beverage-can business accounted for approximately 73% of consolidated net sales, a broader measure than the specific beverage-can product line in its sales table.[13][14]

Its transit-packaging products include manual, semi-automatic, and automatic equipment and tools for applying or removing strapping and film, as well as steel and plastic strapping, industrial film, protective airbags, edge protectors, and honeycomb products. Crown also provides customer consultation and product-development support, line implementation and quality assurance, and engineering and technical assistance for packaging design and production.[2]

In 2025, reported product sales were $8.535 billion for metal beverage cans and ends (about 69.0% of total sales), $2.026 billion for transit packaging (16.4%), $943 million for metal food cans and ends (7.6%), $428 million for other products (3.5%), and $433 million for other metal packaging (3.5%). Percentages are calculated from total sales of $12.365 billion.[16] [13]

Crown Holdings reports four business segments. For the six months ended June 30, 2026, Americas Beverage—beverage cans and ends, steel crowns, glass bottles and aluminum closures—generated $3,229 million, or approximately 46.6% of consolidated net sales.[23][24] European Beverage manufactures aluminum beverage cans and ends for customers across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa; it generated $1,323 million, or about 19.1%.[25][24]

Company history

Crown’s history began in 1892, when William Painter patented the crown cork and founded Crown Cork & Seal in Baltimore. The company expanded its canmaking operations over subsequent decades, introducing high-speed three-piece canmaking in 1930 and reaching 60 plants worldwide by 1977.[10]

From 1990 through 1996, Crown made a series of major acquisitions, including portions of Continental Can, CONSTAR and CarnaudMetalbox, expanding its international packaging operations.[10] In 2003, Crown Cork & Seal formed Crown Holdings, Inc. as a public holding company, with Crown Cork & Seal becoming its wholly owned subsidiary.[11]

Crown continued expanding through acquisitions, including Mivisa in 2014, EMPAQUE in 2015 and Signode in 2018.[29] In 2021, it sold 80% of its European Tinplate business to KPS, retaining a minority stake; the remaining interest was to be sold as part of the 2024 sale of Eviosys to Sonoco.[32][33] [10]
