CRH plc is a multinational building materials company and one of the largest suppliers of building materials globally, providing products and services used across infrastructure, non-residential and residential construction markets. Its business combines essential materials such as aggregates and cement with value-added building products and construction services, and it organizes these activities across Americas Materials Solutions, Americas Building Solutions and International Solutions. Key offerings include aggregates, cement, readymixed concrete, asphalt, and a range of infrastructure and outdoor living products such as drainage systems, enclosures, precast structures, masonry and hardscapes.[1][2][3][4][5]
The company has market leadership positions in North America, Europe and Australia, operates in 28 countries, and runs thousands of sites globally. North America is its largest market, while its international operations are centered primarily on Europe and Australia. Products & services
CRH’s core materials products include aggregates, cement, concrete and asphalt. Aggregates are processed from natural mineral deposits into crushed stone, sand and gravel used in road and rail infrastructure, building foundations, concrete and asphalt. Cement is produced from limestone reserves and serves as the primary binding agent for concrete products and mortars. Its concrete range includes ready-mixed concrete for on-site casting and infrastructural precast and pre-stressed products such as floor and wall elements, beams, vaults, pipes and manholes. Its asphalt products are used in roads, bridges, runways, sidewalks and other surfaces, and CRH states that recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) are used extensively in new asphalt production.[12][13][14][15][16][17]
CRH also provides associated construction and engineering services around these products. In road solutions, it offers manufacturing, installation, maintenance and circularity services, including paving services and the use of recycled materials to reduce waste, emissions and energy use. In infrastructure products, CRH describes offerings that integrate design, materials, products and engineering for below-ground networks serving water, energy and telecommunications. Specific engineered products include underground vaults, drainage systems, enclosures and modular precast structures, along with engineered steel and polymer anchoring, fixing and connecting solutions.[18][19][20][5][21]
In outdoor and architectural products, CRH manufactures concrete masonry and hardscape products such as pavers, blocks, curbs, retaining walls and slabs, and also supplies fencing and railing systems, composite decking, packaged lawn and garden products, pool finishes and packaged concrete mixes. In CRH’s reported mix, the Americas Materials Solutions segment—whose primary products are aggregates, cement, ready-mixed concrete and asphalt plus paving and construction services—represented about 45% of total 2024 revenues and 54% of adjusted EBITDA, while Americas Building Solutions—focused on highly specified and engineered infrastructure and outdoor living products—represented about 20% of revenues and 20% of adjusted EBITDA.[22][23][24][25][21][26] [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][5][21][22][23][24][25][26]
Geographic presence
CRH operates in 28 countries and has major operating positions in North America, Europe and Australia. In 2024 it employed about 79,800 people at 3,816 locations, with roughly 47,400 employees in the Americas Division and 32,400 in the International Division. The Americas Division operates from 2,008 locations across 48 U.S. states and seven Canadian provinces, while the International Division operates from 1,808 locations across 27 countries, primarily in Europe and Australia.[27][11][7][8]
CRH’s revenue is weighted toward the United States. In 2024, revenue by primary geographic market was $21.8 billion from the United States (61.4% of total), $7.0 billion from the rest of Europe (19.7%), $4.0 billion from the United Kingdom (11.2%), and $2.7 billion from rest-of-world markets (7.6%); the company notes that rest of world principally includes Australia, Canada and the Philippines.[28][29]
Geographically, CRH maintains corporate offices in New York and Dublin, and it leases divisional headquarters in Atlanta for CRH Americas and Amsterdam for CRH International.[30] [27][11][7][8][28][29][30]
Business segments
CRH currently reports three reportable segments. Americas Materials Solutions supplies building materials for public infrastructure and commercial and residential construction in North America; its core products include aggregates, cement, readymixed concrete and asphalt, and it also provides paving and construction services. It was the largest segment in 2024, contributing about 45.5% of group revenue ($16,173 million of $35,572 million).[31][32][28] Americas Building Solutions manufactures specified, engineered products and solutions for the North American built environment, serving critical infrastructure such as water, energy, transportation and telecommunications as well as outdoor living markets; it represented about 19.8% of 2024 revenue ($7,059 million).[21][28] International Solutions provides integrated building solutions primarily across Europe and Australia, combining materials, products and services for infrastructure, critical networks, buildings and outdoor living spaces; it accounted for about 34.7% of 2024 revenue ($12,340 million).[33][28]
CRH’s segment structure changed in 2024, when the former Europe Materials Solutions and Europe Building Solutions segments were combined into International Solutions. Under the prior structure, Europe Materials Solutions focused on aggregates, cement, readymixed concrete, asphalt and concrete products for infrastructure and building construction across Europe, while Europe Building Solutions combined materials, products and services for architectural and infrastructural solutions used in utilities, buildings and outdoor living. Based on 2023 revenue, the then-four-segment mix was approximately 44.2% Americas Materials Solutions, 20.1% Americas Building Solutions, 27.7% Europe Materials Solutions and 8.0% Europe Building Solutions.[34][35][36][37]
Separately from its reportable segments, CRH also presents revenue by principal activity/product. In 2024, Road Solutions was about 45.8% of revenue, Essential Materials 26.9%, Outdoor Living Solutions 14.4%, and Building & Infrastructure Solutions 12.8%, reflecting an additional way the company describes its business mix.[19][38][23][20][39] [31][32][28][21][33][34][35][36][37][19][38][23][20][39]
Company history
CRH was formed in 1970 through the merger of Cement Limited and Roadstone Limited, creating the group that became CRH plc. In 1973, it took an early step in international expansion by acquiring Van Neerbos in the Netherlands and establishing a mainland European presence. The company continued to grow through acquisitions, and in 2003 it agreed to acquire Cementbouw in the Netherlands in what it described at the time as its largest ever deal.[40][41]
CRH accelerated its expansion in North America in the 2000s, including Oldcastle Materials’ 2006 acquisition of Ashland Paving and Construction (APAC), which the group described as its largest ever transaction at that point. In 2015, CRH agreed to acquire a package of assets being divested by Lafarge and Holcim, a major portfolio reshaping move, and in 2017 it agreed to buy Ash Grove Cement for US$3.5 billion, completing that acquisition in 2018.
