Company history
Andy Florance founded CoStar Group in 1986 to bring digital information to the commercial real estate industry. The company went public in 1998. Its early expansion included the acquisition of COMPS.COM around 2000 and Property and Portfolio Research in 2009, adding property data and market forecasting capabilities.[30][31][32]
CoStar broadened beyond commercial real estate information through a series of major acquisitions: LoopNet, a commercial property marketplace, in 2012; Apartments.com in 2014; and ForRent in 2018. It subsequently acquired hospitality-data provider STR in 2019, commercial real estate auction platform Ten-X in 2020, and residential property site Homes.com in 2021. These transactions extended its business into property advertising, hospitality analytics, auctions and residential listings.[33][34][35][36][37][38] [33][34][35][38][30][31][32][36][37]
