Compass, Inc.

Updated

Overview

Compass, Inc. is a residential real-estate brokerage and services company. Its agents help clients buy and sell homes, with revenue primarily generated from commissions on completed transactions; the company also operates franchise businesses and offers related title, escrow, and mortgage services. Its cloud-based Home Platform supports agents’ customer relationship management, marketing, and brokerage workflows.[1]

The company’s brokerage operations are concentrated in the United States, while its combined owned-brokerage and franchise network spans approximately 120 countries and territories and includes brands such as Compass, Coldwell Banker, Century 21, and Sotheby’s International Realty. Compass states its mission is “to help everyone find their place in the world.” Founded in 2012, the company reported a network of more than 340,000 real-estate professionals following its January 2026 acquisition of Anywhere Real Estate; this network figure is not an employee count.[4] [1]

Products & services

Compass’s Home Platform combines cloud-based tools for customer relationship management, marketing, client service and brokerage operations with proprietary data, analytics, AI and machine learning. The company describes it as a single-login workflow spanning client contact through closing, with certain title, escrow and mortgage services integrated. Its AI Assistant supports tasks including identifying promising contacts, prioritizing follow-ups and preparing comparative market analyses; Compass One is a client-facing dashboard for managing the homeownership journey.[3]

Other offerings include Compass Concierge, which helps sellers arrange eligible pre-sale property improvements and generally defers repayment until closing, and Private Exclusives, which lets sellers share listings with buyers within Compass’s brokerage network before a potential public launch.[10] Compass’s brokerage services support home buyers and sellers with listing, marketing, selling and finding homes, earning commissions on completed transactions; related services include title, escrow, closing and relocation.[1]

For the six months ended June 30, 2026, reported revenue consisted of gross commission income (about 91.3%), service revenue (5.0%), franchise fees (2.8%) and other revenue (1.0%); percentages are calculated from the reported amounts and may not sum to 100% due to rounding. Service revenue primarily comprises title and escrow fees and also includes relocation fees. Compass does not separately report revenue attributable to individual software products such as Home Platform, Compass One or AI Assistant.[14] [3]

Geographic presence

Compass, Inc.’s operations are primarily U.S.-based, with brokerage activity in major metropolitan markets and a broader U.S. reach through its franchise network. Following its merger with Anywhere, Compass reported a presence in every major U.S. city and a global network spanning approximately 120 countries and territories. Outside the United States, its reach includes direct and master-franchise arrangements.[4][15]

Examples of U.S. markets listed in the company’s directories include New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Dallas and Seattle; its state and county listings include California and New York, among other locations. The company lists its principal executive offices at 110 Fifth Avenue, 4th Floor, New York, NY 10011.[16] The available reporting presents revenue by business segment rather than by geography, and does not provide geographic revenue percentages or employee distribution. Its reported network of more than 340,000 real estate professionals includes owned-brokerage and franchise businesses and is not an employee headcount.[19][4] [4]

Business segments

Compass reported one operating and reportable segment in FY2025. Following the Anywhere merger, effective January 9, 2026, it realigned its business into three reportable segments: Brokerage, Franchise, and Integrated Services.[20][21]

For the six months ended June 30, 2026, Brokerage primarily generated real-estate commissions and represented approximately 91.7% of reported segment revenue. Franchise, which primarily earns royalties and marketing fees under franchise agreements, represented approximately 3.2%. Integrated Services—covering title, escrow, settlement and related transaction services, relocation services, and mortgage services through joint ventures—represented approximately 5.1%. Shares are calculated from reported segment revenue and total segment revenue for that period; they reflect the structure effective January 9, 2026, not a full-year mix.[22][23] [20]

Company history

Compass, Inc. was founded in New York City in 2012 by Ori Allon and Robert Reffkin. On May 7, 2013, it launched as Urban Compass, initially focused on New York apartment rentals, and later that year expanded into home sales.[24]

The company raised capital to support national expansion and technology investment, including a $75 million round announced in 2016 and a $450 million SoftBank Vision Fund investment announced in 2017. In 2018, Compass launched its Concierge program for sellers and acquired Pacific Union and Paragon Real Estate Group, broadening its California brokerage presence.[27]

Compass became a publicly traded company in 2021: its shares began trading on the New York Stock Exchange on April 1, and its IPO closed on April 6. It announced the acquisition of Latter & Blum in April 2024, then announced a combination with @properties and Christie’s International Real Estate in December 2024; that transaction closed on January 13, 2025. In September 2025, Compass announced an all-stock combination with Anywhere Real Estate, completed on January 9, 2026.[30] [10]
