Company history

Commerce Bancshares traces its origins to a Kansas City bank founded in 1865 by Francis Reid Long. The company holding the bank was incorporated in Missouri on August 4, 1966, and Commerce later expanded across Missouri, Kansas and Illinois, followed by entry into Colorado and Oklahoma.[3][20]

Acquisitions contributed to that expansion: Commerce completed the West Pointe Bancorp merger in 2006, adding five branches, and acquired a Denver bank in 2007, marking its first Colorado location. It entered Oklahoma through its 2013 acquisition of Summit Bancshares.[21]

In 2013, John W. Kemper became company president; in 2018 he became CEO, while David W. Kemper moved to executive chairman. Commerce acquired municipal-finance firm L.J. Hart & Company in 2023. On January 1, 2026, Commerce completed its acquisition of FineMark Holdings, adding FineMark National Bank & Trust to Commerce Bank.[24] [20]
