CMS Energy Corp. is a Michigan-based energy company headquartered in Jackson. Its principal business is Consumers Energy, a regulated electric and natural-gas utility; it also owns NorthStar Clean Energy, which develops and operates power generation projects and markets electricity, including renewable energy.[1][2]
Consumers Energy serves customers across Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, providing electricity and/or natural gas to about 6.8 million residents.[3][4] The company’s stated purpose is “world class performance delivering hometown service.” [5] CMS Energy reported $8.539 billion in operating revenue in 2025 and had 8,350 full-time and part-time employees at year-end.[6][7] [1][2][3][4][6][7][5]
Products & services
CMS Energy’s principal products are electricity and natural gas delivered through Consumers Energy. Its electric service combines generation and purchased power with distribution and sales to residential, commercial and industrial customers. Its gas service includes purchasing, transmission, storage, distribution and sales. Customers using an alternative electric or gas supplier can also receive delivery service from Consumers Energy.[8][9][10]
Consumers Energy’s named renewable offerings include a Renewable Energy Program that lets residential customers match 1–100% of their electricity use with Michigan wind and solar, and Solar Gardens subscriptions that provide solar participation without rooftop panels. Business customers can subscribe to renewable energy from new Michigan wind and solar projects. The utility also offers energy-efficiency rebates for qualifying household appliances and business equipment.[11][12][13][14][15]
Through NorthStar Clean Energy, CMS Energy develops, owns and operates grid-connected wind and solar projects and offers onsite solar and storage services, including design, construction, operation and maintenance. NorthStar also provides energy-management services involving renewable supply, third-party energy and capacity. CMS Energy operates primarily in Michigan. Its utility subsidiary, Consumers Energy, provides electricity and natural gas in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, serving approximately 1.9 million electric customers and 1.8 million natural-gas customers in 2025. CMS Energy states that Consumers Energy provides one or both services to 6.8 million of Michigan’s 10 million residents.[1][4][3]
CMS Energy is headquartered in Jackson, Michigan. Its independent power-production portfolio extends beyond the state: as of December 2025, it included plants in which the company had ownership interests in Arkansas, Ohio, Texas and North Carolina, as well as Michigan.[2][20] [1][4][3][2][20][20][20][20][20]

CMS Energy reports three business segments. Electric Utility covers Consumers Energy’s regulated generation, purchase, distribution and sale of electricity in Michigan. Gas Utility covers its regulated purchase, transmission, storage, distribution and sale of natural gas in Michigan. NorthStar Clean Energy comprises subsidiaries engaged in domestic independent power production, including renewable generation development and operation, and the marketing of independently produced power.[21][22][23][8]
Based on 2025 operating revenue, Electric Utility contributed approximately 66% of the segment total ($5.64 billion), Gas Utility 29% ($2.49 billion), and NorthStar Clean Energy 5% ($408 million).[24] [21][22][23][8][24]
Company history
CMS Energy’s history begins with the Michigan electric business that became its principal utility. In 1886, William A. Foote and his partners secured a franchise to provide electric streetlighting in Jackson, Michigan. Consumers Power Company was formed in 1910, bringing together earlier utility businesses.[25][26]
CMS Energy was established as a holding company for Consumers Power in 1987. Consumers Power changed its name to Consumers Energy in 1997. CMS expanded beyond its Michigan utility business with the acquisition of Panhandle Eastern in 1998, then sold that business in 2003 as it divested non-core assets. In 2021, CMS sold its EnerBank USA consumer-finance subsidiary to Regions Bank.[27][28][29][30][31] [25][26][27][28][29][30][31]
