Company history
Cinemark’s origins date to 1984, when founder Lee Roy Mitchell and his wife, Tandy Mitchell, established the business; Cinemark USA was incorporated in Texas that year and opened its first U.S. theater.[21][22] In 1993, the company expanded into Latin America, opening its first theater in Santiago, Chile.[14][23]
Cinemark Holdings, Inc. was incorporated in Delaware in 2006 as the company’s holding company. That year, Cinemark acquired Century Theatres, adding 77 theaters across 12 states; Mitchell’s tenure as CEO also ended in 2006.[22][24][21] On April 24, 2007, its shares began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol CNK.[25]
