Company history

Chunghwa Telecom was established on July 1, 1996, when the telecommunications operations of Taiwan’s Directorate General of Telecommunications were spun off into a company, while the directorate retained its regulatory role. Its shares began trading on the Taiwan Stock Exchange in October 2000, and its American depositary shares were listed on the New York Stock Exchange in July 2003. In August 2005, the Taiwanese government’s ownership fell below 50%, completing the company’s privatization.[33][34]

The company began deploying fiber infrastructure in 2003 and launched its FTTx-based HiNet Optical Era broadband service in 2007. It launched 4G mobile broadband in May 2014 and 5G service in June 2020.[35] [33]
