Overview
China United Network Communications Limited is a Shanghai-listed telecommunications company within the China Unicom group. Through its interests in China Unicom (Hong Kong) Limited and its operating subsidiaries, it provides mobile and fixed-line connectivity, broadband, data and internet services, alongside cloud computing, data-centre and other digital services. Its principal market is mainland China, where the operating group has branches across all 31 provincial-level regions, with a smaller overseas presence.[1][2][3][4]
The group describes its mission as contributing to digital information operations and services and advancing digital technology integration and innovation. As an indication of scale, the Hong Kong-listed operating group reported approximately RMB390 billion in operating revenue in 2024; this is the Hong Kong company’s consolidated figure, not standalone revenue for the Shanghai-listed company.[5][6] [1][2][3][4][5][6]
Products & services
China United Network Communications Ltd offers mobile voice and data, fixed broadband, television, leased-line connectivity and related communications services. Its consumer products include Unicom Cloud Handset, Unicom Cloud Drive, Unicom UHD video and Unicom Housekeeper, alongside 5G New Calling and smart-home services. For enterprise customers, it provides Internet-of-Things connections and 5G private networks; its 5G industry private-network product system includes support for 5G RedCap industrial terminals.[7][8][9][10]
Its computing and digital offerings include Unicom Cloud, data-centre services, systems integration, digital applications, data services and cybersecurity. Unicom Cloud combines cloud infrastructure and platforms with integration, interconnection and security services; named offerings include Video Cloud and Cloud Desktop. The company also provides intelligent-computing resources for AI training and inference, supported by its AINet computing network. In 2024, connectivity and communications accounted for 76% of service revenue, while computing and digital smart applications accounted for 24%; these are business-category shares rather than revenue shares for individual products.[11][2][12][13] [7][8][9][10][11][2][12][13]
Geographic presence
China Unicom’s operating network has branches across all 31 of mainland China’s provincial-level regions, as well as branches in multiple overseas countries and regions. Its mainland telecommunications operating company, China United Network Communications Corporation Limited, has an address at No. 21 Financial Street in Beijing.[14][15][16]
The group’s international operating presence includes Hong Kong, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and Singapore, with subsidiaries also listed in locations including South Africa, Australia and the United Arab Emirates. At the Hong Kong-listed operating-group level, approximately 239,307 employees were based in mainland China at the end of 2024, compared with 862 in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan and 448 in other countries. These figures describe the operating group rather than a separately disclosed geographic breakdown for the A-share company.[15][17][18][19] [14][15][16][17][18][19]
Business segments
China United Network Communications’ business is commonly described through two service-revenue categories. Connectivity and Communications covers mobile and fixed-line broadband services and Internet of Things connectivity. Computing and Digital Smart Applications covers cloud computing, data centres, data services, digital applications and integration, and cybersecurity. In the related China Unicom (Hong Kong) group’s 2024 reporting, these categories accounted for approximately 76% and 24%, respectively, of the revenue attributed to the two categories. These percentages should not be read as a breakdown of the A-share company’s total revenue.[20][9][2][10][3]
The two categories are a business mix, not separate accounting segments: the Hong Kong-listed group reports that it is managed as one integrated operating segment. That accounting treatment has not been independently verified here for China United Network Communications’ A-share filings.[21] [20][9][2][10][3][21]
Company history
China United Network Communications Limited was incorporated on 31 December 2001 and listed its A shares on the Shanghai Stock Exchange on 9 October 2002.[22] A major restructuring of the wider China Unicom group culminated in January 2009, when China Netcom’s operating company was absorbed by China Unicom’s operating company and China Netcom’s parent was absorbed by Unicom Group.[23]
In 2017, Unicom Group undertook a mixed-ownership reform that introduced strategic investors into the listed company and reduced state ownership.[24] In 2019, China Unicom and China Telecom agreed to jointly build a nationwide 5G access network.[25] [22][23][24][25]
