China Railway Group Limited is a Chinese infrastructure and construction group whose core business is building railways, highways, urban rail systems and municipal works. It also provides engineering design and consulting, manufactures construction equipment and components, and develops property. Established in 2007 and listed in Shanghai and Hong Kong, the company operates across China and undertakes projects overseas.[1]

The company describes its guiding motto as “strive to challenge limits and achieve excellence” and links its work to national development and social contribution. In 2024, it reported revenue of RMB1.16 trillion and 297,359 employees at year-end. Its international work has included rail and tunnel projects in Asia, Europe and South America.[4] [1]

Products & services

China Railway Group’s principal service is infrastructure construction, covering railways, highways, urban rail transit, municipal works and buildings. It undertakes projects through contracts that can combine survey, design, procurement, construction and operation. Its design and consulting services include planning, engineering surveys and design, cost consulting and construction supervision. Infrastructure construction accounted for approximately 86.3% of consolidated external revenue in 2024; design and consulting accounted for 1.5%.[9]

Its manufactured products include railway turnouts, tunnel-boring and shield machines, bridge steel structures, construction machinery, prefabricated building components and rail-transit electrification equipment. More specific offerings include composite shield machines and hard-rock tunnel-boring machines; rail-laying and bridge-erecting machines; girder carriers; bridge steel pylons; railway overhead-line equipment; and urban-rail power-supply equipment. The company manufactures and installs large bridge steel structures and provides spare parts and related services for tunnel-construction equipment. Equipment manufacturing represented approximately 2.2% of consolidated external revenue in 2024; separate revenue shares for individual products were not disclosed.[12]

Other offerings include property development and services; operation, maintenance and asset management of infrastructure concessions; construction-material procurement and supply; and mineral products such as copper and cobalt concentrates, copper cathode and cobalt hydroxide.[16] [9]

Geographic presence

China Railway Group’s revenue is concentrated in Mainland China. In 2025, Mainland China accounted for RMB1,019.5 billion, or about 93% of revenue from external customers; other regions, including Hong Kong and Macau, accounted for RMB74.0 billion, or about 7%. The company describes those other regions as primarily including countries and regions in Africa, South America and Asia.[20][21]

Its geographic asset distribution is similarly concentrated: Mainland China held RMB860.7 billion of the reported non-current assets at year-end 2025, compared with RMB19.1 billion in other regions.[22] The company’s registered office is in Beijing, and it lists a principal place of business in Hong Kong. Its overseas footprint includes group entities in Singapore, Laos, Malaysia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Tanzania, Guinea, Angola and Ethiopia.[23][24] [20]

Business segments

China Railway Group reports five operating segments. **Infrastructure construction** covers railways, roads, bridges, tunnels, urban rail, buildings and other civil works; it accounted for approximately 86.3% of 2024 revenue from external customers. **Design and consulting services** provides surveying, design, research, feasibility studies and related services for infrastructure projects, contributing about 1.5%. **Equipment and manufacturing** designs and produces railway-related and engineering equipment, including turnouts and bridge steel structures, contributing about 2.2%.[25]

**Property development** develops, sells and manages residential and commercial properties and contributed approximately 4.2% of 2024 external revenue. **Other businesses**, at about 5.8%, comprises mining, financial business, operation of service concession arrangements, merchandise trading and ancillary activities. The percentages use segment revenue from external customers, excluding intersegment sales.[28] [25]

Company history

China Railway Group Limited was established on 12 September 2007 through a reorganisation of China Railway Engineering Group Company Limited. Its A shares began trading in Shanghai on 3 December 2007, followed by its H shares in Hong Kong on 7 December 2007.[30][31]

In 2015, the company agreed to a restructuring that would exchange interests in several bridge-building and equipment subsidiaries for assets and liabilities of China Railway Erju. A leadership transition followed later in the decade: Li Changjin stepped down as chairman in June 2019, and Zhang Zongyan was elected chairman that August.[32][33] [30]
