VITAS Healthcare provides hospice care and related medical, spiritual, and emotional support to patients and families; Roto-Rooter provides plumbing, drain-cleaning, excavation, and water-restoration services to residential and commercial customers. In the first half of 2026, VITAS and Roto-Rooter accounted for 65% and 35% of service revenue, respectively. [1][2]
Products & services
Chemed’s principal services are delivered through VITAS Healthcare and Roto-Rooter. VITAS provides hospice and end-of-life care through teams that include physicians, nurses, home-health aides, social workers, clergy, and volunteers, with medical care and emotional and spiritual support for patients and families. Its four care levels are routine home care (including care in nursing homes), general inpatient care for short-term pain or symptom management, continuous home care for crises requiring intensive care, and inpatient respite care to relieve caregivers. Continuous home care requires at least eight hours of care in a 24-hour period; respite care is reimbursable for up to five consecutive days.[1][3][4][5]
VITAS’s 2025 revenue before Medicare cap allowance comprised 85.6% homecare, 7.9% inpatient care, 5.1% continuous care, and 1.4% other; for the first half of 2026, the corresponding shares were 86.4%, 8.1%, 4.2%, and 1.3%.[6][7] Roto-Rooter offers plumbing, drain cleaning, excavation, and water-restoration services to residential and commercial customers, through company branches, independent contractors, and franchisees. Its plumbing and drain-cleaning network reaches more than 90% of the U.S. population.[8][1] [1][3][4][5][6][6][6][6][7][7][7][7][8]
Geographic presence
Chemed’s operations are U.S.-focused: the company reports that the vast majority of its continuing-operations revenue is generated in the United States, but does not disclose a country or regional revenue split [9]. Its VITAS hospice business operated 59 programs across 15 states and Washington, D.C., at December 31, 2025; Chemed does not provide state-level revenue or employee distributions [10][11]. Florida is a significant operating area for VITAS: the company identifies substantial operations and an unspecified substantial portion of revenue there, and locates its headquarters, two large programs and an office complex in south Florida [12][13].
Roto-Rooter operates through 120 company-owned branches and independent-contractor operations, alongside 345 franchisees; the reported footprint does not specify branch locations by state or country [11]. Chemed’s 2025 segment revenue figures are not geographic: VITAS generated about 64% and Roto-Rooter about 36% of consolidated revenue [14]. [9][10][12][13][14][11]

Company history
Chemed was incorporated in Delaware in 1970 as a subsidiary of W.R. Grace & Co. and took over Grace’s Special Products Group in 1971. It operated as a Grace subsidiary until becoming independent on March 10, 1982.[11]
Chemed acquired Roto-Rooter in 1996, adding the plumbing and drain-cleaning business to its operations. In 1997, it combined its National Sanitary Supply subsidiary with a Unisource Worldwide subsidiary. In 2004, Chemed completed its merger with VITAS Healthcare, expanding into hospice care; Chemed had previously owned a minority stake in VITAS.[15][16] [11][15][16][11][15][16]
