Company profile

CF Industries Holdings, Inc.

Updated

Overview

CF Industries Holdings, Inc. is a global manufacturer of hydrogen and nitrogen products, with its core business in nitrogen fertilizers and related industrial chemicals. Its principal products include ammonia, urea, urea ammonium nitrate and ammonium nitrate, as well as industrial products such as diesel exhaust fluid and nitric acid. These products serve agricultural, industrial, emissions-control and explosives markets.[1][2]

The company’s manufacturing footprint spans the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, supported by North American storage, transportation and distribution infrastructure. CF Industries states its mission is “to provide clean energy to feed and fuel the world sustainably.” It reported FY2025 net sales of $7.084 billion and 2,900 employees as of December 31, 2025.[1] [1]

Products & services

CF Industries’ principal nitrogen products include anhydrous ammonia, granular urea, urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) and ammonium nitrate (AN). Ammonia is the base product, containing 82% nitrogen and 18% hydrogen; it is sold as fertilizer and for industrial and emissions-control uses, and is also upgraded into other nitrogen products. Granular urea contains 46% nitrogen. UAN is a liquid fertilizer typically containing 28–32% nitrogen, while AN contains 29–35% nitrogen and is used as fertilizer and as a component in commercial explosives.[5] CF also lists diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), urea liquor, nitric acid and aqua ammonia among products sold primarily to industrial customers.[10][11] Its product pages specify UAN grades of 28%, 30% and 32%, and describe DEF as an aqueous solution.[12][13]

For FY2025, segment net sales totaled $7,084 million. Based on disclosed segment sales, ammonia contributed approximately 30.7%, granular urea 25.1%, UAN 30.5%, AN 5.9% and Other 7.7% of net sales; these percentages are calculations from reported amounts.[14]

The company does not identify a separate services business in the cited disclosures. Its product-delivery capabilities include shipment by truck and rail, with some facilities also offering pipeline, deep-water dock and loading access; freight may be included in product sales when CF arranges delivery under specified contract terms.[20] [5]

Geographic presence

CF Industries’ production footprint is concentrated in the United States, with facilities in Louisiana (Donaldsonville and Waggaman), Iowa (Port Neal/Sergeant Bluff), Mississippi (Yazoo City), and Oklahoma (Verdigris/Claremore and Woodward). It also has facilities in Medicine Hat, Alberta, and Courtright, Ontario, and a site at Billingham, UK. Billingham has nitric-acid and ammonium-nitrate operations and ammonia storage; ammonia production there was idled in 2022, and CF has imported ammonia for upgrading at the site. CF also has a 50%-owned ammonia joint venture in Trinidad and Tobago.[23]

Its terminal and transportation network is located primarily in the Midwestern United States; the company says it owns or leases approximately 45 terminals. CF’s principal executive offices are in Northbrook, Illinois. The 2025 annual filing and 2026 second-quarter report do not provide revenue by country or region, or an employee geographic distribution. The 2026 second-quarter report notes lower ammonium-nitrate production associated with the idled Yazoo City plant and a higher proportion of UK ammonium-nitrate sales year over year, without stating country-level revenue amounts or percentages.[28] [23]

Business segments

CF Industries reports five product-based business segments: Ammonia, Granular Urea, UAN, AN and Other.[32][33] Ammonia produces anhydrous ammonia, sold for fertilizer and industrial uses and also used as an input to other nitrogen products.[6] Granular Urea produces solid urea fertilizer; UAN produces liquid urea ammonium nitrate fertilizer; and AN covers ammonium nitrate used as fertilizer and in commercial explosives.[7] Other primarily includes diesel exhaust fluid, urea liquor, nitric acid and aqua ammonia.[34]

In FY2025, net sales were $2,176 million for Ammonia (about 30.7% of consolidated sales), $1,781 million for Granular Urea (25.1%), $2,161 million for UAN (30.5%), $421 million for AN (5.9%) and $545 million for Other (7.7%), against consolidated net sales of $7,084 million.[38] Shares are calculated from reported segment net sales and rounded to one decimal. CF Industries also discloses revenue by product and destination geography; this is a separate revenue view rather than a different set of reportable segments.[39][40] [32]

Company history

CF Industries traces its origins to 1946, when it was established as Central Farmers Fertilizer Company by regional agricultural cooperatives. The company adopted the name CF Industries in 1970. Its Donaldsonville complex began producing ammonia in 1966, with construction completed in 1969.[41][42]

In 2005, CF Industries completed an initial public offering and converted from a cooperative to a publicly traded company.[43] In 2010 it acquired Terra Industries, adding five nitrogen fertilizer manufacturing facilities.[44] In 2014, it sold its phosphate business to Mosaic, refocusing on nitrogen products.[45] The company completed major capacity expansions in 2016, including new ammonia and urea plants at Port Neal, Iowa.[46] In 2020, it broadened its strategic focus to include low-carbon ammonia and decarbonization.[47] [43]
