Overview
Century Aluminum Co. is a primary aluminum producer in the metals sector. Its core business is aluminum smelting, producing standard-grade and value-added metal, including ingot, sow, billet, foundry alloy and molten aluminum. The company also has alumina-refining and carbon-anode operations.[1][2][3][4]
Its smelters are in Kentucky and South Carolina in the United States and in Grundartangi, Iceland. Other operations include a 55% interest in the Jamalco alumina refinery in Jamaica and a carbon-anode facility in the Netherlands.[5][2] Century Aluminum describes its purpose as “responsibly produc[ing] the aluminum the world needs” and says it began in 1995.[6]
For FY2025, the company reported net sales of approximately $2.53 billion, primary-aluminum capacity of about 770,000 tonnes per year, and production of about 638,000 tonnes.[7][1] Its company website reports more than 3,000 employees and operations in four countries.[6] [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][6]
Products & services
Century Aluminum sells primary aluminum in standard ingot grades including P0610, P1015 and P1020, as well as sow, extrusion billet and foundry products. Billet is offered in 7–14-inch diameters across the 1XXX, 2XXX, 3XXX and 6XXX alloy series; the company also produces foundry alloy and can deliver molten aluminum to nearby customers at Sebree.[8][4][9][3]
At its Grundartangi smelter, the casthouse can produce up to 150,000 tonnes of billet annually. Its expansion increased foundry-alloy capacity from 60,000 to 120,000 tonnes per year. The facility also produces Natur-Al™, a low-carbon aluminum product made using Icelandic hydroelectric and geothermal power, available as standard ingot, foundry ingot or billet.[10][11][8]
Through its 55%-owned Jamalco joint venture, Century produces alumina from bauxite; Jamalco has approximately 1.4 million tonnes of annual capacity, and most of Century’s share of alumina is intended for its smelters. Century’s FY2025 filings report 638,000 tonnes of primary aluminum production and approximately 1.0 million tonnes of Jamalco alumina production. The filings reviewed do not disclose production or revenue shares by aluminum product form.[12][2][1] [4][9][3][10][11][12][2][1][8][8]
Geographic presence
Century Aluminum’s operating footprint spans the United States, Iceland, Jamaica and the Netherlands. Its three wholly owned primary-aluminum smelters are in Sebree, Kentucky; Mt. Holly in Goose Creek, South Carolina; and Grundartangi, Iceland. The company also holds a 55% interest in the Jamalco bauxite-mining and alumina-refining joint venture in Jamaica, and owns a carbon-anode facility in Vlissingen, Netherlands, which supplies the Iceland smelter. Hawesville, Kentucky, was sold on February 2, 2026, and is not part of the current operating footprint.[13]
The company’s principal executive office is in Chicago, Illinois. Century lists Inola, Oklahoma, as a planned smelter project, rather than an operating site. Its 2025 Form 10-K does not disclose revenue by country or region, or employee distribution by location; the company’s careers page gives a total workforce figure of 3,000 employees without a geographic breakdown.[13][14][15] [13][14][15][14][15]
Business segments
Century Aluminum reported one operating and reportable segment in its FY2025 Form 10-K: its consolidated business, with no separately named segments for individual products, facilities, or operating activities. The company states that its chief operating decision maker began reviewing results on a consolidated basis in the first quarter of 2025, and prior-period segment information was recast accordingly.[16][17][18]
The segment encompasses primary aluminum and alumina production. Its activities include smelting standard-grade and value-added primary aluminum, bauxite mining and alumina refining through Jamalco in Jamaica, and carbon-anode production in the Netherlands. These activities are included in the single reportable segment rather than reported as separate segments.[16][17][1][2]
The single segment represented 100% of reported segment net sales, or $2,527.9 million, for the year ended December 31, 2025; the company does not provide separate revenue contributions for its facilities or product lines.[7] [16][17][18][1][2][7]
Company history
Century Aluminum was founded in 1995, with initial assets that included Ravenswood Aluminum Corporation and a minority interest in the Mt. Holly smelter. It completed an initial public offering in March 1996.[19]
The company expanded its smelting portfolio in the early 2000s, acquiring an 80% interest in the Hawesville, Kentucky smelter in 2001 and the remaining 20% in 2003. In 2004 it acquired the Grundartangi smelter in Iceland, which had begun operating in 1998; subsequent expansions increased that plant’s capacity.[19][20][21][22]
Century acquired the Sebree, Kentucky smelter in 2013 and completed its purchase of Alcoa’s remaining interest in Mt. Holly in 2014, bringing the South Carolina facility under full ownership. Ravenswood, which had been idled in 2009, was permanently closed in 2015.[23][24][25]
In 2023, Century added a position in alumina through its acquisition of a 55% interest in the Jamalco bauxite-mining and alumina-refining joint venture in Jamaica. In February 2026, it completed the sale of the Hawesville site to a Terawulf affiliate, retaining a minority equity interest in the redevelopment venture.[12][26] [12][26][19][20][21][22][23][24][25]
