Company history
Casella Waste Systems began in 1975 as Doug Casella’s one-truck waste-collection business in Rutland, Vermont; John Casella joined as a full-time partner the following year. In 1977, the company established Vermont’s first recycling facility, and during the 1980s it expanded recycling infrastructure across the Northeast.[25][7]
The company expanded into Eastern markets in 1996 and Western markets in 1997, and completed its initial public offering in 1997. A major step in its acquisition-led growth came in 1999, when it completed the KTI, Inc. merger; it also merged with Resource Waste Systems that year.[3][26][27]
In subsequent decades, Casella continued to expand through acquisitions, including the 2012 Blow Bros. deal and the 2021 acquisition of Willimantic Waste Paper. In 2023 it completed a group of acquisitions that expanded its Mid-Atlantic and Albany-area operations, followed by additional regional acquisitions in 2024. Casella completed nine acquisitions in 2025 and acquired Mountain State Waste on January 1, 2026, entering West Virginia.[28][29][30][31][32]
John W. Casella, CEO since 1993 and chairman since 2001, became Executive Chairman on January 1, 2026, when Ned Coletta succeeded him as CEO.[33][34][35] [3][30][31][32][33][34][25][7][26][27][28][29][35]
