BioNTech SE

Updated

Overview

BioNTech SE is a biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Mainz, Germany. Founded in 2008, it develops immunotherapies and vaccines, with oncology as its primary research focus and additional programs targeting infectious diseases. Its mission is to harness the immune system to address serious diseases with unmet medical needs. Its research draws on technologies including mRNA and antibody-based therapies.[1]

BioNTech’s marketed product is Comirnaty, a COVID-19 vaccine developed in collaboration with Pfizer. The company has operations across Europe, North America, Asia, Australia and Africa. In 2025, it reported €2.87 billion in revenue and 7,807 full-time-equivalent employees at year-end.[5] [1]

Products & services

BioNTech’s marketed product is Comirnaty, a COVID-19 vaccine developed with Pfizer. Its current and previously marketed formulations use modified-nucleoside mRNA delivered in lipid nanoparticles; the vaccine has been updated for circulating variants, including an LP.8.1-adapted formulation. Pfizer holds marketing and distribution rights in most territories, while BioNTech holds rights in Germany and Türkiye and Fosun holds rights in Greater China.[9] Revenue associated with COVID-19 vaccine sales was approximately €2.0 billion in 2025, or about 70% of BioNTech’s €2.87 billion total revenue; much of that vaccine-related revenue represented its share of a partner’s gross profit.[15][16]

BioNTech’s investigational oncology products span several technologies. Its off-the-shelf FixVac mRNA candidates include BNT113, which encodes HPV16 E6 and E7 antigens for HPV16-positive head-and-neck cancer, and BNT116, which encodes six antigens associated with non-small-cell lung cancer. Autogene cevumeran (BNT122) is an individualized mRNA immunotherapy being studied in cancers including colorectal and pancreatic cancer.[17] Other candidates include pumitamig (BNT327), a bispecific antibody targeting PD-L1 and VEGF-A, and BNT211, a CLDN6-targeting CAR-T cell therapy paired with an RNA vaccine intended to amplify the CAR-T cells. BioNTech also develops antibody-drug conjugates and investigational infectious-disease vaccines. These pipeline candidates are not marketed products.[21] Its commercial arrangements include product partnerships and licensing rather than a separately identified standalone services portfolio.[15][26] [9]

Geographic presence

BioNTech is headquartered in Mainz, Germany. Its German operations include manufacturing sites in Mainz, Marburg and Idar-Oberstein, while its U.S. footprint includes a research and manufacturing campus in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The company also has a manufacturing facility in Singapore and has developed a BioNTainer manufacturing site in Kigali, Rwanda; it has announced plans for a clinical-scale mRNA facility in Melbourne, Australia.[27]

In 2024, the United States accounted for €1,847.8 million, or 67%, of revenue; Germany accounted for €706.9 million, or 26%; and the rest of the world accounted for €196.4 million, or 7%. At year-end 2024, BioNTech had 6,772 full-time-equivalent employees: 5,672 in Europe, 811 in North America, 100 in Asia and Australia, and 189 in Africa.[34] [27]

Business segments

BioNTech reports **one operating and reportable segment**: management assesses the business as a whole rather than reporting separate oncology or infectious-disease segments. Its activities span cancer immunotherapies and infectious-disease vaccines, including work using mRNA, cell therapies and other approaches.[39]

For 2024, BioNTech disclosed revenue by category rather than by business segment. COVID-19 vaccine revenue was €2,432.1 million, approximately **88%** of total revenue; other revenue was €319.0 million, approximately **12%**. The “other” category is not an oncology segment, and BioNTech does not report a separate oncology revenue contribution.[44] [39]

Company history

BioNTech was founded in 2008 by Uğur Şahin, Özlem Türeci and Christoph Huber to develop immunotherapies, including cancer treatments. In 2018, it began a collaboration with Pfizer on an mRNA-based influenza vaccine. BioNTech went public on Nasdaq in 2019.[45]

In 2020, BioNTech and Pfizer collaborated to develop a COVID-19 vaccine, which received its first U.S. emergency-use authorization that December. The vaccine, Comirnaty, received full U.S. approval in 2021. BioNTech subsequently expanded its capabilities through acquisitions, including the 2023 purchase of artificial-intelligence company InstaDeep.[48] [45]
