Overview
Biogen Inc. is a global biopharmaceutical company that discovers, develops and delivers therapies for people with serious and complex diseases. Its stated focus is neurology, specialized immunology and rare diseases.[1] Its products and collaborations span multiple sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy, Alzheimer’s disease and rare neurological conditions, including Friedreich’s ataxia.[2][3][4]
Biogen operates in the United States and international markets.[1][5] In 2025, it reported approximately $9.9 billion in total revenue and employed approximately 7,500 people worldwide, including 4,200 in the United States and 3,300 in other countries.[6][7] [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
Products & services
Biogen’s multiple sclerosis products include TYSABRI, TECFIDERA, VUMERITY, AVONEX and PLEGRIDY. TECFIDERA and VUMERITY form its fumarate product group, while PLEGRIDY is a polymer-conjugated interferon beta-1a product. Multiple sclerosis products generated $4.04 billion in 2025, approximately 41% of total company revenue; TYSABRI was the largest individual product at $1.67 billion.[8][9][10][11][12][6]
Its rare-disease products are SPINRAZA for spinal muscular atrophy, SKYCLARYS for Friedreich’s ataxia and QALSODY for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in adults with an SOD1 mutation. Together, these products generated $2.15 billion in 2025, approximately 22% of total revenue; SPINRAZA accounted for $1.55 billion.[13][14][11][12][6] Biogen also markets biosimilars including BENEPALI, IMRALDI, FLIXABI, BYOOVIZ and TOFIDENCE; biosimilars generated $729 million, approximately 7% of total revenue, in 2025.[15][11][6]
Beyond its directly sold products, Biogen collaborates with Eisai on LEQEMBI (lecanemab), an anti-amyloid antibody for Alzheimer’s disease with intravenous and subcutaneous maintenance options in the U.S. Biogen manufactures LEQEMBI for Eisai. It also receives OCREVUS royalties and shares U.S. profits from the anti-CD20 medicines RITUXAN, GAZYVA and LUNSUMIO. These collaboration, royalty and manufacturing activities are reported separately from direct product sales.[16][17][18][19] [8][9][10][11][12][6][13][14][11][12][15][11][16][17][18][19]
Geographic presence
Biogen is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and has major facilities in the United States and Europe. Its listed U.S. properties include research and office space in Cambridge and manufacturing, laboratory and warehouse facilities in North Carolina. International properties include manufacturing and office facilities in Solothurn, Switzerland; an international headquarters in Baar, Switzerland; and a fill-finish manufacturing site in Athlone, Ireland.[20][21]
In 2025, Biogen reported $7.12 billion in product revenue from external customers. The United States accounted for $3.55 billion, or about 50%; Europe excluding Germany for $1.87 billion, or 26%; Germany for $853 million, or 12%; Asia for $419 million, or 6%; and other geographies for $428 million, or 6%. These percentages describe product revenue, not total company revenue.[22][23] [20][21][22][23]
Business segments
Biogen reports **one operating segment**, rather than separate reportable segments for its therapeutic areas. Its product-revenue categories provide a more detailed view of the business: in 2025, multiple sclerosis accounted for approximately 41% of total company revenue, rare disease 22%, biosimilars 7%, and other products 2%. These categories represented about 57%, 30%, 10%, and 3% of product revenue, respectively. Multiple sclerosis products include TECFIDERA, VUMERITY and TYSABRI; rare-disease products include SPINRAZA, SKYCLARYS and QALSODY.[24][8]
The remaining approximately 28% of 2025 revenue came from activities outside those product-revenue categories: anti-CD20 therapeutic programs contributed about 19% of total revenue, Alzheimer’s collaboration revenue about 2%, and contract manufacturing, royalties and other revenue about 7%. The anti-CD20 programs include OCREVUS royalties and collaboration profits from RITUXAN, GAZYVA and LUNSUMIO; Alzheimer’s collaboration revenue relates to Biogen’s work with Eisai on LEQEMBI. These are revenue streams within the single operating segment, not additional reportable segments.[25][17] [24][8][12][12][12][12][26][26][26][26][25][17]
Company history
Biogen was founded in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1978 by scientists Charles Weissmann, Heinz Schaller, Kenneth Murray, Walter Gilbert and Phillip Sharp. Its multiple sclerosis treatment Avonex received U.S. approval in 1996. Separately, IDEC Pharmaceuticals helped develop Rituxan, which was approved in 1997; Biogen and IDEC merged in 2003 to form Biogen Idec.[27][28][29][30]
The combined company expanded its multiple sclerosis portfolio with Tysabri, first approved in 2004, and Tecfidera, approved in 2013. It shortened its name to Biogen in 2015. Spinraza, approved in 2016, marked an expansion into spinal muscular atrophy treatment. In 2023, Leqembi, developed with Eisai, received traditional U.S. approval for Alzheimer’s disease, and Biogen acquired Reata Pharmaceuticals.[31][32][30][33][34][35] [27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35]
