Overview

Bentley Systems is an infrastructure-engineering software company whose products support the design, construction, and operation of infrastructure assets. Its portfolio includes engineering applications such as MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer, project collaboration tools such as ProjectWise, and infrastructure digital-twin technologies. The company serves infrastructure owners and engineering organizations across sectors including public works and utilities, resources, industrial, and commercial facilities.[1]

Bentley states its purpose is to advance the world’s infrastructure for better quality of life. Founded in 1984, it operates internationally, with 2025 revenue of $1.502 billion across the Americas, EMEA, and APAC. A 2024 company article reported more than 5,000 colleagues worldwide and customers in 194 countries.[8] [1]

Products & services

Bentley’s Open Applications are domain-specific modeling and simulation software for infrastructure design and engineering. The portfolio includes MicroStation for 3D design and documentation; OpenBridge for bridges; OpenBuildings for building design; OpenFlows for water, wastewater and stormwater modeling; OpenPlant for process plants; OpenRail and OpenRoads for rail and road infrastructure; and OpenSite, OpenTower, OpenTunnel and OpenUtilities for site, tower, tunnel and utility-network projects. The applications support workflows across design, simulation and analysis, including exchange of Bentley and third-party file formats and use of industry standards and design codes.[14]

Bentley’s Seequent portfolio provides subsurface and geoscience tools, including Leapfrog for 3D geological modeling, GeoStudio and PLAXIS for geotechnical analysis, OpenGround for geotechnical information management, MX Deposit for drill-hole data management, and Oasis montaj for geophysical and geological data analysis. Bentley Infrastructure Cloud connects project-delivery and asset-lifecycle information: ProjectWise supports design and construction workflows, SYNCHRO supports 4D construction planning, and AssetWise supports asset operations and maintenance. The iTwin Platform and Cesium technologies support creation and use of infrastructure digital twins; Asset Analytics and Bentley Copilot add automated issue analysis and an AI assistant for workflows and information.[26]

Bentley offers perpetual licenses with SELECT maintenance, which includes technical support, software upgrades, learning resources and license-management benefits. Its subscription options include Enterprise 365, a consumption-based portfolio subscription, and cloud services subscriptions for cloud offerings and recurring services. In FY2025, subscriptions generated $1,376.7 million, or about 91.7% of revenue; perpetual licenses contributed $46.2 million (3.1%) and services $78.9 million (5.3%). These figures reflect revenue categories rather than revenue by individual product.[43] [14]

Geographic presence

Bentley Systems reports revenue across the Americas (the U.S., Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean), EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa), and APAC (Asia-Pacific); revenue is attributed according to customer location.[47][48] For the six months ended June 30, 2026, revenue was $445.0 million in the Americas, $249.0 million in EMEA and $140.9 million in APAC, equivalent to approximately 53.3%, 29.8% and 16.9% of total revenue, respectively.[49] In 2025, the corresponding annual figures were $790.5 million (52.6%), $436.8 million (29.1%) and $274.5 million (18.3%); U.S.-attributed revenue was $620.4 million.[50]

It also owns a product-development and technical-support location in India and leases facilities at 96 locations in the U.S. and internationally.[52] [47]

Business segments

Bentley Systems reports one reportable segment: the development and marketing of computer software and related services. The company does not disclose separate segment revenue contributions; its chief operating decision maker reviews consolidated financial information.[55][56]

The business focuses on software and related services for infrastructure engineering and the infrastructure lifecycle, including design, construction, operations and maintenance. Reported offerings include engineering and modeling applications, infrastructure project-delivery and information-management tools, asset analytics, and digital-twin capabilities.[57]

As alternative views of revenue mix—not operating segments—FY2025 geographic revenue was approximately 52.6% Americas ($790.5 million), 29.1% EMEA ($436.8 million), and 18.3% APAC ($274.5 million), out of total revenue of $1.502 billion.[50] By revenue type, subscriptions contributed approximately 91.7% ($1,376.7 million), perpetual licenses 3.1% ($46.2 million), and services 5.3% ($78.9 million).[58] [55]

Company history

Bentley Systems was founded on September 5, 1984, by brothers Keith and Barry Bentley. Its first commercial product was PseudoStation; the company adapted it for personal computers and introduced it as MicroStation in 1986. ProjectWise, its project information management product, followed in 1999 as Bentley expanded its software portfolio internationally.[59]

In 2000, Greg Bentley became CEO, succeeding Keith Bentley, and in 2005 the company acquired STAAD and RAM International, broadening its structural engineering software offerings. Bentley priced its initial public offering in September 2020, with its shares beginning to trade on Nasdaq under the symbol BSY.[62]

The 2021 acquisition of Seequent expanded Bentley’s capabilities in geoscience and subsurface modeling. On July 1, 2024, Nicholas Cumins succeeded Greg Bentley as CEO, while Greg Bentley became Executive Chair. In 2025, Bentley completed acquisitions of Talon Aerolytics and Pointivo technology, announced in January 2026, to extend its asset analytics capabilities.[64] [59]
