Company history

Bank of Montreal was established in Montreal in 1817, and the company traces its origins to nine founders who came together to create what it describes as Canada’s first bank.[72][73] Over time, it developed from a domestic banking institution into a broader North American bank, with BMO noting early U.S. roots dating to 1818 and a significant later milestone in 1984, when it acquired Harris Bank in Chicago.[74] In 1994, Bank of Montreal became the first Canadian bank listed on the New York Stock Exchange.[76]

Its U.S. expansion continued with the announced acquisition of Marshall & Ilsley in 2010 and the completion of that transaction in July 2011, after which M&I Bank was combined with Harris Bank to form BMO Harris Bank N.A.[77] More recently, on February 1, 2023, BMO completed its acquisition of Bank of the West from BNP Paribas, marking another major step in the bank’s long-running buildout in the United States.[80] [72]
