Overview

Axfood is a Swedish food-retail group operating across grocery retail and wholesale. Its businesses include discount, supermarket and hypermarket stores, convenience retail, foodservice wholesale, restaurants and online pharmacy; Dagab supports the group through assortment, purchasing and logistics. Its operations are primarily in Sweden, with Eurocash serving cross-border shopping near Norway.[1]

Axfood’s purpose is “to create a better quality of life for everyone,” and its vision is to lead in “affordable, good and sustainable food.” [2] Founded in 2000, the group reported 2025 net sales of SEK 89.152 billion and an average workforce of 15,620 FTEs.[3] [1]

Products & services

Axfood’s private-label portfolio includes Garant, Eldorado, Minstingen, Fixa, Såklart, Mevolution and Gastrino. The brands cover food and household categories, including baby products, personal and dental care, cleaning and laundry products, home goods, and products for restaurant customers. Garant is positioned around quality and added value, while Eldorado focuses on basic products at discount prices; Garant’s Swedish-made range includes its meat and dairy products, as well as cheese and cold cuts. Product development uses customer data and consumer-panel testing, and Axfood reported approximately 270 private-label launches in 2025.[6] Private labels represented 32.0% of Group sales in 2025.[10]

Examples of product development include RåggyBerry, a snack made using white-cheese residue; a lower-carbon patty made with broad beans and herring that otherwise might have been used as animal feed; and Nöt & Grönt hybrid mince, which was expanded to include a lower-carbon hamburger.[11][12]

Axfood’s retail offerings include Willys’ broad-assortment discount grocery stores and online service, and Hemköp’s locally adapted assortments and meal solutions. Online grocery orders can be delivered to customers’ homes or collected at stores.[13] Snabbgross supplies restaurants, fast-food operators and cafés through stores and e-commerce, with an assortment of about 12,000 items; its Snabbgross Club concept also offers bulk-packaged food and household products to consumers through paid membership.[16] Other offerings include Apohem’s online pharmacy, with prescription and over-the-counter medicines and approximately 25,000 other items, and Urban Deli’s combination of restaurant, deli and food store.[19][20] Dagab develops assortments and private labels and supplies stores and e-commerce; its transport-management systems support delivery-route optimisation.[21][22] [6]

Geographic presence

Axfood’s operations and sales are principally focused on Sweden, with its retail concepts serving the Swedish market. Its Eurocash chain is positioned for cross-border shopping along the Norway-adjacent area, with six stores extending from Storlien to Strömstad. The company does not disclose revenue by country or region: its 2025 net-sales figures are reported by operating segment rather than geography.[23]

Axfood’s retail footprint includes 250 Willys stores, 203 stores in the Hemköp segment, and 40 City Gross stores; the Hemköp segment includes Tempo. Snabbgross had 31 stores at year-end 2025. The Group’s logistics network includes facilities in Backa and Landskrona and a logistics centre in Bålsta that became fully operational in 2025. A further centre was planned for Kungsbacka to strengthen supply in southern Sweden, with operations expected to begin in 2030.[25]

Axfood AB’s registered office and head office are in Stockholm. The report also identifies subsidiary registered offices in Gothenburg, Strömstad and Stockholm. It reports 15,620 full-time equivalents for 2025 but does not provide employee distribution by geography.[30] [23]

Business segments

Axfood’s latest full-year reporting, for 2025, presents five operating segments. The approximate shares below are each segment’s external net sales as a percentage of consolidated net sales of SEK 89,152 million. The same five-segment structure is reflected in the H1 2026 reporting.[33]

Willys is the discount grocery retailer, including Eurocash, and contributed about 54.5% of 2025 consolidated net sales. Hemköp operates grocery stores and contributed 9.4%; City Gross is a hypermarket and e-commerce business with a broad assortment and fresh-food focus, contributing 10.0%.[34][4]

Snabbgross is a food-service wholesaler serving restaurants, fast-food operators and cafés, and includes Snabbgross Club; it contributed 6.6%. Dagab handles group-wide assortment, purchasing, private-label development and logistics, and contributed approximately 19.4% of consolidated sales on an external-sales basis. Dagab’s reported segment sales also include substantial internal sales to other Axfood businesses.[16] [33]

Company history

Hemköp opened its first store in Borlänge in 1958, and Willys began in Gothenburg in 1975. Axfood was formed on 11 May 2000 through the merger of D&D Dagligvaror, including Dagab, with listed Hemköp. That year, Axfood also combined Willys Cash and LL:s Livs under the Willys name.[38]

In 2004, Spar and Billhälls were brought together with Hemköp under the Hemköp brand; in 2013, warehousing, transportation and purchasing were consolidated in Dagab. Axfood expanded through acquisitions in 2017, including Mat.se, Middagsfrid and Eurocash, and in 2021 completed its acquisition of Bergendahls Food’s wholesale business while taking a 9.9% stake in City Gross. Dagab’s automated logistics centre in Bålsta began making store deliveries in 2023. Axfood completed its acquisition of City Gross in November 2024, moving from partial to full ownership.[39] [38]
