Avis traces its origins to 1946, when Warren Avis opened a rental location at Detroit’s Willow Run Airport. The company describes its purpose as bringing mobility options closer to customers’ needs and supporting a more sustainable future for transportation.[5] [1][2][3][4][5]
Products & services
Avis Budget Group offers vehicle rental through its Avis and Budget brands, alongside truck rental and car sharing through Zipcar. Its fleet includes luxury, electrified, specialty-use and light commercial vehicles; Avis and Budget share vehicles in markets where both brands operate, while most Zipcar vehicles are dedicated to car sharing.[1][6]
Zipcar provides self-service vehicle reservations by the hour or day, with vehicles available in neighborhoods, business districts, office complexes and campuses. Reservations can be made online or by mobile app, and rates include fuel, secondary insurance and other typical vehicle-ownership costs. Zipcar for Business offers direct billing and employee-benefit programs for companies and government organizations.[7][8][9]

Geographic presence
Avis Budget Group operates in approximately 180 countries, with around 10,000 rental locations worldwide. Its reported geographic segments are the Americas and International; the International category includes Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and Asia and Australasia. The company does not report the footprint as a country-by-country breakdown in the cited geographic revenue data.
In 2025, revenue was $8.900 billion in the Americas (about 76.4% of total) and $2.752 billion internationally (about 23.6%). These percentages are calculated from the reported segment amounts; the figures describe revenue by broad region, not by individual country. [11][12][12][13][13][13][11]
Business segments
Avis Budget Group reports two geographic operating segments. Americas covers vehicle rental primarily in North, South and Central America and the Caribbean, along with car sharing in some markets and licensee operations where the company does not operate directly. In FY2025, the segment generated approximately 76% of company revenue.[14][15] International covers vehicle rental primarily in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Australasia, with car sharing in some markets and licensee operations where the company does not operate directly; it contributed approximately 24% of FY2025 revenue.[16][15]
On an Adjusted EBITDA basis, Americas represented approximately 66% and International approximately 34% of the two reportable segments’ combined FY2025 Adjusted EBITDA. These shares use the reportable-segment subtotal and exclude corporate and other.[17][2][3][18] [14][15][16][17][2][3][18]
Company history
Avis Budget Group’s brands have separate origins: Avis began operating in 1946 with a small airport car-rental fleet, and Budget was founded in 1958. The present parent company took shape in 2006, when Cendant’s vehicle-rental business continued as Avis Budget Group and began trading under the ticker symbol CAR.[5][19][20][21]
The company expanded its international reach by acquiring Avis Europe in 2011. In 2013, it added Zipcar’s car-sharing operations and acquired Payless Car Rental; subsequent European growth included its Nordic licensee operations and the Maggiore Group in Italy, acquired in 2015.[22][23][24][25][26] [5][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26]
