A major proprietary product family is Duralast, which AutoZone presents as covering more than 20 categories. Named product lines on AutoZone’s sites include Duralast brake pads and rotors, Duralast Gold pads and rotors, Duralast Elite pads, Severe Duty pads, and Duralast battery lines including Duralast Gold and Duralast Platinum. The battery range includes absorbed glass mat (AGM) and enhanced flooded battery (EFB) variants, while the broader Duralast line also spans batteries, starters, alternators, clutches, and water pumps.[11]

AutoZone also sells software and service products through ALLDATA. The portfolio includes ALLDATA Repair, which provides unedited OEM repair information, TSBs, DTCs, repair procedures, and more than 300,000 interactive wiring diagrams with coverage for 44,000+ engine-specific vehicles; ALLDATA Collision, which adds OEM collision-repair information such as body/frame sectioning and panel replacement guidance; ALLDATA Diagnostics, a tablet-based scan tool that supports pre- and post-scans, code retrieval and clearing, system tests, relearns, resets, initializations, and calibrations; and Shop Manager / Shop Manager Pro, which handle estimates, repair orders, invoices, parts ordering, work-in-progress tracking, technician time reporting, customer communications, and inventory management. In-store and customer-support services include Loan-A-Tool, Fix Finder diagnostic checks for check-engine and ABS lights, testing of starters, alternators, and batteries, battery charging, and used-oil collection for recycling.[3] [3]

Geographic presence

AutoZone’s operations are concentrated in the Americas, with stores in the United States, Mexico, and Brazil; as of August 31, 2024, it operated 6,432 stores in the U.S., 794 in Mexico, and 127 in Brazil, for a total of 7,353 stores. The company reports these activities within a single Auto Parts Stores segment that includes its domestic business as well as Mexico and Brazil.[3][23]

Sales are heavily weighted toward the U.S. In fiscal 2024, 88% of net sales came from the United States, 11% from Mexico, and 1% from Brazil; the comparable mix was 89%, 10%, and 1% in fiscal 2023, and 92%, 8%, and 0% in fiscal 2022. The company also states that its long-lived assets are primarily located in the U.S., with no individual non-U.S. country representing a material concentration of long-lived assets.[24][25]

Its principal executive office is in Memphis, Tennessee, and store support functions are centralized in Memphis; Monterrey and Chihuahua, Mexico; São Paulo, Brazil; and Gurugram, India, with additional offices in Shanghai, China, and Istanbul, Turkey. At August 31, 2024, AutoZone had about 126,000 employees, including roughly 17,500 in international operations; about 90% of employees worked in stores or direct field supervision, around 6% in distribution centers, and about 4% in store support and other functions.[26]

Its supply chain is organized around geographic proximity to stores, which are replenished primarily from the nearest distribution center. The network also includes 327 domestic hub stores and 46 international hub stores for same-day access to inventory, and by year-end fiscal 2024 AutoZone had 109 domestic mega hub stores and 3 mega hub stores in Mexico.[29][30] [3]

Business segments

AutoZone reports one primary reportable segment, **Auto Parts Stores**. The company states that its primary operating segments—**Domestic Auto Parts, Mexico, and Brazil**—are aggregated into this single reportable segment because of the similarity in products sold and the way results are reviewed by management. This segment covers the company’s core automotive parts and accessories store operations across those markets.[23]

AutoZone also reports an **Other** category for operating segments that are not individually material enough to be separately reportable. This category includes **ALLDATA**, which provides diagnostic, repair, collision, and shop management software for the automotive repair industry, and **E-commerce** sales through autozone.com that are not fulfilled by local stores. In fiscal 2024, **Auto Parts Stores** generated about **98.2%** of net sales ($18.15 billion of $18.49 billion total), while **Other** contributed about **1.8%** ($339 million).[32][10]

Separately from its segment reporting, AutoZone discloses sales by geography: **88%** of fiscal 2024 sales came from the **United States**, **11%** from **Mexico**, and **1%** from **Brazil**. This geographic view supplements the segment note, but the company does not present the U.S., Mexico, or Brazil as separate reportable segments.[33][23] [23]

Company history

AutoZone began operations in 1979, when J.R. “Pitt” Hyde III opened the first Auto Shack store in Forrest City, Arkansas, as part of Malone & Hyde.[34] During the 1980s, the company expanded its store base and changed its name from Auto Shack to AutoZone in 1987.[35][37] AutoZone then went public on the New York Stock Exchange on April 2, 1991.[38]

In 1996, AutoZone expanded into automotive diagnostic and repair information through the acquisition of ALLDATA.[39] It added to its retail footprint in 1998 by acquiring Chief Auto Parts and purchasing 100 Express store locations from Pep Boys.[40][41] In 2001, the company sold TruckPro, sharpening its focus on its core auto parts business.[42] More recently, a major leadership transition took place in 2024, when William C. Rhodes III became executive chairman and Philip B. Daniele III became president and chief executive officer.[43][44] [34]
