Company profile

Autodesk, Inc.

Updated

Overview

Autodesk, Inc. is a global provider of 3D design, engineering, and entertainment technology software. Its products are used across architecture, engineering, construction, product design, manufacturing, media, and entertainment, helping customers visualize, simulate, and analyze real-world performance early in the design process. Autodesk organizes its offerings around four primary product families: Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operations, AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT, Manufacturing, and Media and Entertainment. The company states that it is committed to advancing a more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive world and to helping people “design and make a better world for all.” [1]

Autodesk sells its professional software globally through direct and indirect channels and divides its customer-related operations into three geographic regions: the Americas, EMEA, and APAC; it also expects international sales to remain the majority of net revenue. In fiscal 2025, Autodesk generated $6.131 billion of net revenue, including $2.716 billion from the Americas, $2.307 billion from EMEA, and $1.108 billion from APAC. As of January 31, 2025, the company employed approximately 15,300 people.[1] [1]

Products & services

Autodesk’s products are primarily sold as professional design software and related cloud services for architecture, engineering, construction, manufacturing, and media workflows. In building design and construction, AutoCAD is a customizable and extensible CAD application for design, drafting, detailing, and visualization across construction, civil engineering, manufacturing, and plant design, while AutoCAD LT is a lighter 2D drafting and documentation product. Revit is BIM software for designing, building, and maintaining buildings using information-rich models, with tools spanning architecture, MEP, structural engineering, and construction. Autodesk also sells the Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection, Autodesk Build, and BIM Collaborate Pro; Build provides project management and collaboration tools such as document management, issue tracking, RFIs, submittals, meetings, and field collaboration, while BIM Collaborate Pro is cloud software for design collaboration and design management on complex projects. BuildingConnected adds SaaS preconstruction capabilities for subcontractor qualification, bid management, and risk management.[8]

In manufacturing, Fusion is a cloud-based 3D CAD, CAM, and CAE platform intended to connect the product development process in a single environment. Inventor supports digital prototyping with 3D mechanical design, simulation, analysis, tooling, visualization, and documentation, and can combine AutoCAD drawings and model-based design data into one digital model to validate form, fit, and function before manufacturing. Autodesk also offers the Product Design & Manufacturing Collection and Vault for product data management. In media and entertainment, Maya provides 3D modeling, animation, effects, rendering, and compositing for film, video, game development, and design visualization, while 3ds Max is another 3D content creation product and Flow Production Tracking is used for production management and review workflows.[17]

The company wraps these products in subscription plans that combine desktop software with cloud functionality, collaborative workflows, ongoing updates, cloud services, and enterprise business agreements, and it supports customers with technical support, knowledge-base content, forums, webinars, and reseller training. Autodesk also emphasizes platform capabilities such as AI, machine learning, generative design, automation, APIs, and Autodesk Platform Services for interoperability and third-party application development. By product family, fiscal 2025 net revenue was weighted toward AECO at about 47.9% of total revenue, followed by AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT at 25.6%, Manufacturing at 19.4%, and Media & Entertainment at 5.1%.[25] [8]

Geographic presence

Autodesk reports net revenue geographically based on customer location, with fiscal 2025 revenue of $2.716 billion in the Americas (44.3% of total), $2.307 billion in EMEA (37.6%), and $1.108 billion in APAC (18.1%).[32][6] Within the Americas, the U.S. accounted for $2.228 billion (36.3% of total revenue) and Other Americas for $488 million (8.0%), so roughly 63.7% of revenue came from outside the U.S.[6] Autodesk states that it sells its products and services globally through a mix of direct and indirect channels.[33]

Operationally, the majority of Autodesk’s research and product development is performed in the United States, Canada, and India, while translation and localization are performed principally in Singapore and Ireland.[34] Its long-lived assets were also concentrated in the Americas at $183 million as of January 31, 2025, compared with $64 million in EMEA and $39 million in APAC, indicating a heavier fixed-asset footprint in the Americas.[35][36] Autodesk’s principal executive offices are at One Market Street in San Francisco, and its office-locations page identifies San Francisco as worldwide headquarters, Singapore as APAC headquarters, and Dublin as EMEA headquarters.[37][38] [32]

Business segments

Autodesk reports a single operating segment for GAAP purposes, with the chief operating decision maker evaluating the business on a consolidated basis rather than as multiple reportable segments [39]. For additional disclosure, Autodesk disaggregates net revenue by product family, identifying four primary product families: Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operations (AECO), AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT, Manufacturing (MFG), and Media and Entertainment (M&E) [2][6].

On that product-family view, AECO was the largest category in FY2025 at about 47.9% of net revenue ($2.94 billion of $6.13 billion), focused on architecture, engineering, construction, and operations offerings including AEC Collections, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Revit, and Payapps [6][31]. AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT contributed about 25.6% ($1.57 billion), representing Autodesk’s core drafting and design software family [6][31]. Manufacturing contributed about 19.4% ($1.19 billion), centered on manufacturing design and engineering tools such as MFG Collections, Inventor, and Fusion [6][31]. Media and Entertainment accounted for about 5.1% ($315 million), covering digital content and entertainment-oriented products, with PIX noted as a contributor [6][31]. An additional “Other” category made up about 1.9% ($118 million) [6].

Autodesk also discloses revenue by product type rather than by operating segment: Design represented about 83.3% of FY2025 net revenue, Make about 10.7%, and Other about 6.1% [6]. This indicates that, while Autodesk is officially a single-segment company, its main internal revenue breakdown for understanding the business is the product-family mix, led by AECO, followed by AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT, then Manufacturing [39][6]. Company history

Autodesk was formed in 1982, when founder John Walker and his team began work on bringing computer-aided design to personal computers; AutoCAD was launched that year, and Autodesk says the .dwg file format dates to that first release.[40][41] In the following decades, Autodesk broadened its portfolio through acquisitions, including Revit Technology Corporation in 2002 and Alias in 2006.[42][43]

In the mid-2010s, Autodesk made a major strategic shift from perpetual software licenses toward subscriptions and cloud delivery, announcing in 2015 that most new software licenses would transition to subscription and in 2016 that it was accelerating that move through a restructuring plan.[44][45] In 2017, after Carl Bass stepped down, Autodesk named Andrew Anagnost president and chief executive officer.[46][47] [40]
