Atmos Energy Corporation is a Dallas-based natural gas utility. Its regulated distribution business serves approximately 3.4 million customers across eight U.S. states, while its pipeline and storage business includes a major intrastate pipeline system in Texas.[1][2][3][4]

Products & services
Atmos Energy’s principal product is natural gas delivered to residential, commercial, public-authority and industrial customers. Its distribution service includes regulated gas sales and transportation of gas supplied by others through its local distribution systems.[1][8]
Its pipeline and storage services move and store natural gas for utilities and other customers. Atmos Pipeline–Texas offers firm transportation and storage to local distribution companies, as well as interruptible transportation for pipeline interconnections, directly served industrial customers and power generators. It also offers pooling services for shippers selling gas to end users on its system.[9] The Texas system comprises approximately 5,700 miles of transmission pipelines and five underground storage facilities.[10] Atmos also operates a 21-mile Louisiana transmission pipeline principally used to aggregate supply for its Louisiana distribution operations.[11] Atmos Pipeline–Texas services account for more than 80% of the pipeline-and-storage segment’s revenue.[12] [1][8][11][12][9][10]

Atmos Energy’s natural-gas distribution operations serve customers in eight U.S. states: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. Its Mid-Tex division includes the Dallas–Fort Worth area, while its West Texas division includes Amarillo, Lubbock and Midland. At September 30, 2025, those two Texas divisions had about 2.15 million customer meters—approximately 63% of the meters listed across its distribution divisions. This is a share of customer meters, not revenue.[13]
The company’s pipeline and storage operations are concentrated in Texas through Atmos Pipeline–Texas; they also include a 21-mile pipeline near New Orleans that supports gas supply for its Louisiana distribution operations. In fiscal 2025, it generated $746.8 million of segment net income, about 62% of the company’s total.[2][1][19]
**Pipeline and Storage** comprises the Atmos Pipeline–Texas (APT) pipeline and storage operations and natural gas transmission in Louisiana. The segment owns approximately 5,700 miles of transmission lines, and APT operates five underground storage facilities in Texas. It generated $452.0 million of segment net income in fiscal 2025, about 38% of the total.[20][21][19] [2][1][19][20][21][19]
Company history
Atmos Energy traces its origins to natural-gas operations in the Texas Panhandle in 1906. Its modern corporate history began in 1983, when Pioneer spun off its Energas natural-gas distribution division as an independent, publicly held company. Energas adopted the Atmos Energy name in 1988.[4]
Atmos expanded through a series of utility acquisitions, including United Cities Gas in 1997, Louisiana Gas Service in 2001 and Mississippi Valley Gas in 2002. Its 2004 acquisition of TXU Gas’s distribution and pipeline operations was another major expansion. Atmos later sold distribution assets in Missouri, Illinois and Iowa in 2012 and substantially all of its Georgia distribution assets in 2013.[22][23][24][25][26][27] [4][22][23][24][25][26][27]
