Company history

Atlas Copco traces its origins to Stockholm in 1873, when the business was founded as Atlas to supply products for Sweden’s railways. As industrialization advanced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it broadened from railway equipment into industrial products such as tools, rock drills, and compressors. The company entered compressor manufacturing in 1904, when it began making piston compressors in-house, establishing a business that later became central to the group’s development.[36]+2

A major identity shift came in 1956, when Atlas Diesel acquired compressor specialist Arpic Engineering SA and adopted the name Atlas Copco, derived from Compagnie Pneumatique Commerciale, reflecting its stronger emphasis on compressed-air technology.[38] Over the following decades, Atlas Copco expanded internationally and built its industrial portfolio through repeated acquisitions, a strategy the company describes as having resulted in hundreds of deals over time.[39] One of the most important later milestones came in 2018, when Atlas Copco separated its mining and rock excavation business through the distribution and listing of Epiroc as an independent company.[40][41] [36]+6
