It generated approximately 63.6% of consolidated net sales ($1,030.7 million of $1,620.8 million).[16][17] Architectural Specialties focuses on specialty ceiling, wall and other interior and exterior architectural applications, with products made from materials including metal, felt, resin/glass, wood, wood fiber and glass-reinforced gypsum. Company history
Armstrong’s history dates to 1860, when Thomas Armstrong started Armstrong Cork Company in Pittsburgh, making bottle stoppers before expanding into cork insulation and sound-absorbing products. The company moved its headquarters to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1929 and listed its stock in 1935.[10]
It established a Research & Development Center in Lancaster in 1950 and introduced its Acoustical Fire Guard ceiling system in 1960. The company changed its name to Armstrong World Industries in 1980; later milestones included becoming a founding member of the U.S. Green Building Council in 1993 and launching a ceiling-tile recycling program in 1999.[10][20]
In 2016, Armstrong separated and distributed its flooring business as Armstrong Flooring, Inc.[21][22] From 2020 through 2025, it broadened its Architectural Specialties portfolio through acquisitions including Arktura, BŌK, 3form, Zahner, Geometrik and Parallel.[23][24][25][26][27][28][29] In April 2026, Mark Hershey succeeded Victor Grizzle as President and CEO, with Grizzle becoming Executive Chair.[30] [21][23][30][10][20][22][24][25][26][27][28][29]
