Products & services

Aon’s products are primarily brokerage, consulting, and analytics-based service offerings. In Commercial Risk Solutions, it offers insurance and specialty brokerage, global risk consulting, captives management, and Affinity programs. Its brokerage teams use analytics to design insurance programs and provide access to proprietary facilities such as Aon Client Treaty and other forms of capital across carriers, placement structures, and geographies. This offering is organized around product areas including property, casualty, financial and professional lines, construction, transportation, energy, cyber, surety, trade credit, crisis management, transaction liability, and climate, while its consulting and captive teams advise on risk retention versus risk transfer and claims recovery.[11]

In Reinsurance Solutions, Aon offers treaty reinsurance, facultative reinsurance, Strategy and Technology Group services, and capital markets advisory. Treaty reinsurance is aimed at portfolio-level underwriting and capital objectives, while facultative reinsurance provides access to global facultative markets for specific risk transfer needs. The Strategy and Technology Group combines strategic advice with data-driven consulting, analytics, and modeling tools including Tyche, ReMetrica, and PathWise to help clients deploy capital efficiently, strengthen balance sheets, meet regulatory requirements, and execute reinsurance transactions. Its capital markets offering includes insurance-linked securities, capital raising, restructuring, mergers and acquisitions, and related corporate finance advisory services.[3][12]

In Health Solutions, Aon provides consulting and brokerage, consumer benefits, and talent advisory services. These offerings include customized health and benefits strategies, global benefits program design and management, financing optimization, employee experience support, and regulatory compliance assistance in more than 120 countries. Consumer benefits programs are delivered through a proprietary digital platform that supports enrollment using data, analytics, and tailored products, and talent advisory covers assessment and selection, compensation benchmarking, total rewards optimization, corporate governance, ESG consulting, and strategic employee communications. In Wealth Solutions, Aon offers retirement consulting, pension administration, and investments consulting, including actuarial services, pension risk transfer, integrated pension administration, balance-sheet volatility management, investment advisory for defined benefit, defined contribution, and Master Trust plans, and delegated investment solutions in partial or full discretionary models.[13][5]

Business segments

Aon plc officially reports two reportable segments: Risk Capital and Human Capital, and management evaluates performance and allocates resources on that basis. Risk Capital consists of Commercial Risk Solutions and Reinsurance Solutions, while Human Capital consists of Health Solutions and Wealth Solutions.[21]

Risk Capital is focused on commercial insurance and specialty brokerage, global risk consulting, captives management and affinity programs through Commercial Risk Solutions, and on treaty reinsurance, facultative reinsurance, strategy and technology services, and capital markets through Reinsurance Solutions. Human Capital is focused on health consulting and brokerage, consumer benefits solutions, and talent advisory services through Health Solutions, and on retirement consulting, pension administration, and investment consulting through Wealth Solutions.[24][23]

Based on 2024 reported revenue, Risk Capital contributed about 67% of consolidated revenue and Human Capital about 33%, with a small negative amount from eliminations; in 2023 the mix was about 71% Risk Capital and 29% Human Capital. Using Aon’s 2024 principal service-line revenue, Commercial Risk Solutions represented about 50% of total company revenue, Reinsurance Solutions about 17%, Health Solutions about 21%, and Wealth Solutions about 12%; within the segments, Commercial Risk Solutions was roughly three-quarters of Risk Capital and Health Solutions roughly two-thirds of Human Capital.[25] [21]

Company history

Aon’s modern history begins in 1982, when the Ryan Insurance Group merged with Combined International Corporation, starting the company’s expansion as a larger insurance and advisory organization. In 1987, the holding company was renamed Aon, and the company has said it was quoted on the New York Stock Exchange that same year.[27][28]

During the 1990s, Aon grew through a series of acquisitions, with official timeline materials highlighting deals such as Hudig-Langeveldt in 1991, Frank B. Hall in 1992, and Grieg Insurance in 1998. The company later made two major strategic transactions: the 2008 acquisition of Benfield Group, which formed Aon Benfield, and the 2010 merger with Hewitt Associates, which created Aon Hewitt. In 2012, Aon completed the move of its parent company domicile from Delaware to the United Kingdom, becoming Aon plc and beginning trading on the NYSE as Aon plc.[29] [27]
