Products & services
Amgen’s disclosed offerings are primarily prescription medicines—branded biologics, specialty therapies and biosimilars—rather than a separately described services business. Its principal products include Prolia, ENBREL, XGEVA, Repatha, Otezla, TEPEZZA, EVENITY, KYPROLIS, Nplate, Aranesp, BLINCYTO, KRYSTEXXA, Vectibix and TEZSPIRE, with additional marketed products including AMJEVITA/AMGEVITA, MVASI, Neulasta, RAVICTI, UPLIZNA, Parsabiv, LUMAKRAS/LUMYKRAS, Aimovig, TAVNEOS, PROCYSBI, EPOGEN and IMDELLTRA.[9][10] In 2024, Prolia accounted for about 13.7% of product sales, ENBREL 10.4%, XGEVA 6.9%, Repatha 6.9% and Otezla 6.6%, out of total product sales of $32.026 billion.[11]
Key products span several therapeutic areas. In bone health, Prolia and XGEVA contain the same active ingredient but are approved for different indications, patient populations, doses and dosing frequency; Prolia is used mainly for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at high fracture risk and to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis, while XGEVA is used mainly to prevent skeletal-related events in patients with bone metastases from solid tumors and multiple myeloma.[12][13] EVENITY is a monoclonal antibody that inhibits sclerostin and is marketed for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at high fracture risk.[14][15] In inflammation and cardiovascular disease, ENBREL is a tumor necrosis factor blocker for rheumatoid arthritis, plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis; Otezla is an oral small-molecule phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitor for plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis and Behçet’s-related oral ulcers; and Repatha is a human monoclonal antibody PCSK9 inhibitor used to reduce myocardial infarction, stroke and coronary revascularization risk and to lower LDL-C in primary hyperlipidemia, including heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia.[16][17][18][19]
Amgen’s oncology, immunology and rare-disease portfolio includes BLINCYTO, an anti-CD19 x anti-CD3 BiTE molecule for CD19-positive B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia; KYPROLIS for relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma; Vectibix for wild-type RAS metastatic colorectal cancer; TEPEZZA, a fully human monoclonal antibody and targeted IGF-1R inhibitor for thyroid eye disease; and TEZSPIRE, a first-in-class human monoclonal antibody that acts on the airway epithelium as an upstream source of inflammation in severe asthma.[20][21][22][23][24][25] Its biosimilar lineup includes AMJEVITA/AMGEVITA for HUMIRA, MVASI for Avastin, KANJINTI for Herceptin, AVSOLA for Remicade, RIABNI for Rituxan, BEKEMV/BKEMV for SOLIRIS, WEZLANA for STELARA and PAVBLU for EYLEA; Amgen describes AMJEVITA specifically as a monoclonal antibody that inhibits TNF-alpha binding to cell-surface TNF receptors.[26][27] [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27]
Geographic presence
Amgen’s geographic revenue base remains centered in the United States. In 2024, product sales were $23.301 billion in the U.S. and $8.725 billion in the rest of the world, representing 73% and 27% of product sales, respectively; total revenues were $23.863 billion in the U.S. and $9.561 billion in the rest of the world. Amgen states that its largest concentration of sales and marketing personnel is in the United States and Europe, while it also commercializes products in Japan, China and other parts of Asia, Latin America and the Middle East through affiliates, acquired rights and third-party collaborations. In the U.S., sales are mainly to pharmaceutical wholesale distributors, while outside the U.S. sales are mainly to healthcare providers and/or pharmaceutical wholesale distributors depending on local market practice.[28][29][30][11][6][31]
Operationally, Amgen’s internal commercial manufacturing network spans the United States and its territory, including Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Ohio and California, as well as Ireland, the Netherlands and Singapore. The company says a substantial majority of its commercial manufacturing is in Puerto Rico, while a substantial majority of clinical manufacturing is in Thousand Oaks, California. Its distribution network includes centers in Puerto Rico, Kentucky, California and the Netherlands that support worldwide distribution of most commercial and clinical products.[32][33][34]

Thousand Oaks, California is its corporate headquarters; other significant U.S. locations include Juncos, Puerto Rico; West Greenwich, Rhode Island; Deerfield, Illinois; Cambridge, Massachusetts; New Albany, Ohio; San Francisco, California; Tampa, Florida; and Louisville, Kentucky. The company defines this segment as the discovery, development, manufacturing and delivery of innovative medicines, and says its CEO reviews performance and allocates resources on a consolidated basis rather than by separate business units; accordingly, human therapeutics accounts for essentially 100% of reported segment revenue and profit.[39][2]
Amgen does provide other analytical views, but not as formal reportable segments. The main alternative breakdown disclosed is geography: in 2024, product sales were 73% from the U.S. ($23.3 billion) and 27% from the rest of the world ($8.7 billion). Company history
Amgen was founded in Thousand Oaks, California on April 8, 1980 as Applied Molecular Genetics, or AMGen, with William K. Bowes and Winston Salser involved in its formation and George B. Rathmann serving as its first chief executive. The company went public in 1983, raising $42.3 million, and established itself commercially with the approval of Epogen in 1989, followed by Neupogen in 1991.[46][47][48]
A major expansion came in July 2002, when Amgen completed its acquisition of Immunex, adding products including Enbrel and broadening its biotechnology portfolio. Robert A. Bradway became chief executive in May 2012 and chairman in January 2013, and later that year Amgen completed its acquisition of Onyx Pharmaceuticals. More recently, Amgen completed its acquisition of Horizon Therapeutics in October 2023, marking another significant step in the company’s development through acquisitions.[49][50][51][52] [48][50][52][46][47][49][51]
