Alphabet Inc. is a global technology holding company whose largest business is Google. Its core operations are organized around Google Services and Google Cloud, with smaller non-Google businesses reported as Other Bets. Google Services includes products and platforms such as ads, Android, Chrome, devices, Gmail, Google Drive, Google Maps, Google Photos, Google Play, Search, and YouTube, while Google Cloud provides infrastructure, platform, collaboration, and other enterprise cloud services including Google Cloud Platform and Google Workspace. Alphabet states that its mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.[1][2][3][4]
The company’s business is defined by digital advertising, consumer internet services, cloud computing, devices, and AI-related products and infrastructure. In 2024, Alphabet generated $350.0 billion of total revenue, including $304.9 billion from Google Services and $43.2 billion from Google Cloud, and it had 183,323 employees at year-end. Products & services
Alphabet’s product set is led by Google Services, which includes Search, ads, Android, Chrome, devices, Google Maps, Google Play, and YouTube [3]. Its advertising products are reported as Google Search & other, which monetizes Google search properties and other owned properties such as Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Play; YouTube ads, which are sold on YouTube properties; and Google Network, which serves ads on third-party properties participating in AdMob, AdSense, and Google Ad Manager [8][9][10]. Other Google Services offerings include consumer subscriptions such as YouTube TV, YouTube Music and Premium, NFL Sunday Ticket, and Google One; platform revenue primarily from Google Play app sales and in-app purchases; and device revenue primarily from the Pixel family [11][12][13]. In 2024, Google Services generated $304.9 billion of revenue, about 87.1% of Alphabet’s total; within that, Google Search & other contributed $198.1 billion, YouTube ads $36.1 billion, Google Network $30.4 billion, and subscriptions, platforms, and devices $40.3 billion [5].
Google Cloud provides infrastructure, platform, application, and other enterprise cloud services [14][15]. Alphabet describes its cloud infrastructure as open, reliable, and scalable compute, networking, and storage that can run workloads in Google Cloud, at the edge, or in customer data centers; it also includes custom Tensor Processing Units used to help lower machine costs and latency and to train and serve AI models [16][17]. Its AI platform includes Vertex AI, which lets developers train, tune, augment, test, and deploy applications using Gemini and other generative models, with services such as vector search, grounding, and distillation, while Gemini for Google Cloud is offered as AI agents for software development and cybersecurity tasks [18][19]. Google Workspace includes Calendar, Gmail, Docs, Drive, and Meet, and Gemini for Google Workspace adds AI features for writing, organizing, visualizing, workflow acceleration, and richer meetings [20][21]. Google Cloud generated $43.2 billion of revenue in 2024, or about 12.3% of Alphabet’s total [5].
Outside those two groups, Other Bets includes services such as Waymo’s fully autonomous paid ride-hailing service, and the segment’s revenue is generated primarily from healthcare-related services and internet services [22][14]. Geographic presence
Alphabet is headquartered in Mountain View, California, with its principal executive offices at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043.[23][24][25][26] The company owns and leases office facilities and data centers around the world, primarily in Asia, Europe, and North America.[23] Alphabet reported 183,323 employees as of December 31, 2024, and noted that some countries have work councils and statutory employee-representation requirements.[27]
Alphabet’s revenue base is geographically diversified. In 2024, 49% of revenue came from the United States ($170.4 billion), 29% from EMEA ($102.1 billion), 16% from APAC ($56.8 billion), and 6% from Other Americas ($20.4 billion).[28][29][30] International operations are significant overall, with international revenue accounting for approximately 51% of consolidated revenue in 2024.[31]
Its asset footprint is also weighted toward the United States: as of December 31, 2024, Alphabet reported $139.0 billion of long-lived assets in the United States and $45.6 billion internationally.[32] [23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32]
Business segments
For reporting purposes, Alphabet states that Google comprises two segments: Google Services and Google Cloud; it also separately discloses Other Bets, which is a combination of multiple operating segments that are not individually material.[33][34] Google Services is the core segment and includes ads, Android, Chrome, devices, Google Maps, Google Play, Search, and YouTube, with revenue coming primarily from advertising, plus consumer subscriptions, app and in-app purchases, and devices.[35] Google Cloud includes infrastructure and platform services, applications, and other services for enterprise customers, with revenue mainly from Google Cloud Platform, Google Workspace, and other enterprise services.[3] Other Bets generates revenue primarily from healthcare-related services and internet services.[34]
Using 2024 revenue as a reference, Google Services contributed about 87% of Alphabet revenue, Google Cloud about 12%, and Other Bets about 0.5%.[36] Alphabet also provides a more detailed revenue disaggregation that effectively breaks down Google Services: Google Search & other was about 57% of total revenue, YouTube ads about 10%, Google Network about 9%, and Google subscriptions, platforms, and devices about 12% in 2024.[5] These categories are defined respectively as revenue from Google search properties and other owned properties such as Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Play; YouTube properties; Google Network properties participating in AdMob, AdSense, and Google Ad Manager; and subscriptions, Google Play app and in-app purchases, and Pixel devices.[37][8][9][38][39][40] [33][34][35][3][36][5][37][8][9][38][39][40]
Company history
Alphabet traces its origins to Google, which grew out of Larry Page and Sergey Brin’s work at Stanford University in 1995 and was incorporated in 1998.[41][42][43] Google went public in August 2004, marking an important step in its development from a research-driven search company into a large public technology business.[42]
Over the following decade, Google expanded beyond search into other major internet and software platforms. In 2006 it agreed to acquire YouTube, in 2007 it backed the launch of Android through the Open Handset Alliance, and in 2008 it launched the Chrome browser; later shareholder communications pointed to YouTube, Android, and Chrome as long-term bets that matured into major platforms.[44][45][46][47] In 2015, Google reorganized under a new holding company, Alphabet Inc.; the plan was announced on August 10 and implemented on October 2, when Alphabet became the successor issuer to Google Inc.[48][49] In 2019, co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin stepped back from day-to-day leadership, and Sundar Pichai became CEO of Alphabet as well as Google.[50][51] [43][47][48][41][42][44][45][46][49][50][51]
