Company history
ALK’s origins date to 9 June 1923, when doctor Kaj Baagøe and pharmacist Poul Barfod established the Allergological Laboratory and produced Denmark’s first pharmaceutically manufactured allergen extract. The company moved production into dedicated facilities in 1949, developed methods to identify allergy-triggering proteins and standardise allergen extracts in 1972, and launched its first standardised allergy-immunotherapy product in 1978.[30]
ALK’s official history dates the introduction of sublingual allergy-immunotherapy tablets to 1990. In 2005 it became a listed company. Its grass-pollen tablet received European approval in 2006; in 2014, the U.S. FDA approved its GRASTEK and RAGWITEK tablets. ALK established a U.S. subsidiary in 2016, and in 2017 the FDA approved ODACTRA, a sublingual treatment for house-dust-mite allergic rhinitis in U.S. adults. The company marked the centenary of its 1923 origins in 2023.[7][2][31] [30][7][2][31]
