Alibaba Group Holding Ltd

Updated

Overview

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. is a technology company centered on digital commerce. Its businesses include the Taobao and Tmall retail platforms in China, international marketplaces such as AliExpress and Alibaba.com, and cloud computing and AI services. Founded in 1999, the company states its mission as “to make it easy to do business anywhere.” [1]

Alibaba operates across China and international markets, with commerce and cloud computing defining its principal activities. For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, it reported revenue of approximately RMB1.02 trillion and had 131,462 full-time employees at year-end.[2] [1]

Products & services

Alibaba’s China commerce products include Taobao and Tmall for online retail, Tmall Supermarket for grocery and everyday goods, Tmall Global for imported products, Xianyu for consumer-to-consumer sales of idle goods, and 1688.com for domestic wholesale. It offers merchants customer-management services to attract shoppers and promote listings, with fees based on measures including clicks, impressions and sales; 1688.com also earns membership and value-added service fees. Taobao and Tmall Group generated RMB449.8 billion in fiscal 2025 segment revenue, equivalent to about 45.1% of consolidated revenue.[8] [8]

Geographic presence

Alibaba Group is based in China, where it conducts most of its operations. Its China-focused commerce businesses include Taobao and Tmall, while its international platforms include AliExpress globally, Trendyol in Türkiye, Lazada in Southeast Asia, and Daraz in South Asia, particularly Pakistan and Bangladesh. Its Cainiao logistics network operates in China and internationally.[12]

For the fiscal year ended March 2025, Taobao and Tmall Group generated RMB449.8 billion in revenue, or about 45% of Alibaba’s RMB996.3 billion consolidated revenue; Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group generated RMB132.3 billion, or about 13%. These are business-segment figures, **not** a complete country-by-country split of revenue. Alibaba lists its principal executive office in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong SAR.[11][15] [12]

Business segments

Alibaba reports three named operating groups and an “All others” category under its fiscal 2026 segment structure. **Alibaba China E-commerce Group** comprises Taobao and Tmall, Taobao Instant Commerce and domestic wholesale marketplace 1688.com, among other businesses. **Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group** includes retail platforms such as AliExpress, Lazada and Trendyol, as well as wholesale marketplace Alibaba.com. **Cloud Intelligence Group** provides cloud services spanning infrastructure, platforms and AI models.[2]

For the year ended March 2026, these groups generated approximately 54%, 14% and 15% of consolidated revenue, respectively. **All others**, at approximately 25%, includes Cainiao logistics, Freshippo, Amap, Alibaba Health, digital media and entertainment, and other businesses. These percentages do not add to 100% because reported segment revenue includes transactions between segments; eliminations reconcile it to consolidated revenue. Cainiao and Amap were previously presented differently under Alibaba’s former six-segment structure, so historical segment comparisons require care.[17] [2]

Company history

Alibaba Group was founded in 1999 by 18 people led by Jack Ma. It expanded beyond its original business-to-business marketplace with the launch of the Taobao shopping platform in 2003, Alipay in 2004, Tmall in 2008 and Alibaba Cloud in 2009.[22][23] Alibaba listed on the New York Stock Exchange in September 2014.[24]

Daniel Zhang became chief executive in 2015, and Alibaba agreed to acquire a controlling stake in Southeast Asian e-commerce company Lazada in 2016.[25][26] Zhang succeeded Ma as chairman in 2019, the same year Alibaba completed a secondary listing in Hong Kong.[27][28] In 2023, Alibaba announced a reorganization around six major business groups; later that year, Joe Tsai became chairman and Eddie Wu became chief executive.[29][30] [28]
