Accelerant Holdings

Updated

Overview

Accelerant Holdings is a specialty insurance company built around a data-driven risk exchange that connects specialty insurance underwriters, primarily managing general agents (MGAs), with risk capital providers such as insurers, reinsurers, and institutional investors. Its business is focused on specialty, mainly non-life insurance, and its model emphasizes providing underwriting capacity, data-driven portfolio oversight, and long-term relationships with a relatively small number of significant MGA partners rather than operating as a traditional broad-line insurer.[1] Accelerant states that its mission is to simplify the traditional insurance value chain, and its stated vision is to be the leading marketplace for specialty insurance, powered by data and built for growth.[2][1]

Founded in 2018, Accelerant lists Atlanta, United States, as its headquarters and says it operates in 23 countries.[5] Europe is an important part of its footprint: its Brussels-based carrier serves the EEA and the UK through branches and passporting arrangements, and the company said it was working with over 70 Members by the end of 2024.[6] As general indicators of scale, Accelerant’s website lists 496 employees and annual revenue of $1.1 billion for the broader company, while its European insurance entity reported €848.5 million of gross written premiums in 2024.

Products & services

Accelerant’s disclosed offerings are described primarily as an MGA-focused specialty insurance platform rather than as branded retail insurance products. It distributes insurance through managing general agents, which it calls “Members,” and offers its platform to them through Risk Exchange / Agency Services. Named service features include “Transparent Data & Analytics,” described as superior technology with unparalleled data transparency to manage and grow businesses, and a portfolio approach that takes a big-picture, long-term view of an MGA’s entire book rather than multiple binders by product. Accelerant also says its Risk Exchange model has been extended to external risk capital partners and insurance carriers to increase capacity for Members.[10]

In the available disclosures, the company does not provide a conventional named product catalog; instead, it specifies the non-life insurance classes it is authorized to write. These classes include accident, sickness, land vehicles, ships, goods in transit, fire and natural forces, other damage to property, motor vehicle liability, liability for ships, general liability, credit, suretyship, miscellaneous financial loss, legal expenses, and assistance. Accelerant also states that one of its objectives is developing a suite of products and services that add value for Members.

Geographic presence

Accelerant Holdings states that it is headquartered in Atlanta, United States, and operates in 23 countries. Its disclosed subsidiaries include entities in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Belgium and Malta, indicating a footprint centered on North America and Europe.[5][31]

In Europe, Accelerant Insurance Europe SA is headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, and writes business mainly across the EEA and the UK under passporting arrangements, with coverage listed across a wide set of European markets and a UK branch.[32] The European platform reports five branches in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain; as of 31 December 2024 it had 20 employees excluding branches and 10 employees assigned to those branches.[34] Within Europe, Germany, France, Italy and the Nordic region have been identified as key target markets for further distribution growth.

Business segments

Accelerant publicly reports three operating segments: Exchange Services, MGA Operations, and Underwriting. Exchange Services is described as the core segment and captures the revenue and expenses associated with the Risk Exchange, including the platform’s technology, data ingestion, and operating infrastructure for Members and Risk Capital Partners; Members pay a fixed-percentage, volume-based fee for sourcing, managing, and monitoring the business they write.[36] MGA Operations appears to cover Accelerant’s MGA build/incubation activities, including the Mission MGA platform, while Underwriting covers the group’s risk-bearing underwriting activities.[36][1]

A precise revenue or profit percentage split across those three operating segments was not identifiable in the accessible public disclosures. The available segment note makes clear that Exchange Services is the core business, but it did not provide an extractable public percentage contribution for Exchange Services, MGA Operations, and Underwriting.[36]

Separately, Accelerant Insurance Europe discloses the underwriting portfolio by line of business rather than by operating segment. On a 2024 net premiums written basis, the mix was general liability 26.7%, motor vehicle liability 21.7%, fire and other damage to property 16.4%, miscellaneous financial loss 16.4%, credit and suretyship 12.8%, legal expenses 3.9%, marine, aviation and transport 1.3%, medical expense 0.6%, and other motor insurance 0.1%; in 2023, the largest classes were fire and other damage to property at 31.5% and general liability at 31.2%.

Company history

Accelerant Holdings was founded in 2018, when Jeff Radke and Chris Lee-Smith launched the business in Europe. The company then built out its technology platform in 2019, including portfolio analytics and automated alerts, before expanding into the U.S. in 2020.[1][41]

In 2021, Accelerant paired organic growth with acquisitions and platform development: it acquired Commonwealth Insurance Company of America to support its U.S. market buildout, acquired Kinnell Holdings in the UK, and launched Mission and Reserv. It added Flywheel RE in 2022, then widened its international footprint in 2023 by entering Canada through the acquisition of Omega Insurance and expanding to Australia. In 2024, the company introduced additional product-development and capital-formation initiatives, and in 2025 it completed its initial public offering.
