It secured an offshore exploration permit in Western Australia in 1963, and the North West Shelf consortium in which it participated discovered gas at North Rankin in 1971. The North West Shelf project was commissioned in 1984 and shipped Australia’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) export cargo in 1989.
