Verizon’s geographic footprint is predominantly U.S.-based. Its Consumer wireline operations are concentrated in nine states in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern U.S. plus Washington, D.C., while its Business segment serves customers across the U.S. and provides a subset of products and services to customers around the world [26](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=T-90b3501f2c8b4d23a45107913dca8b6a).

The company’s principal executive offices are at 1095 Avenue of the Americas, New York, New York 10036, and it maintains facilities throughout the U.S., including administrative and sales offices, customer care centers, retail sales locations, garage work centers, switching centers, cell sites and data centers [27](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=T-be8bfa4e27804aa1b212bfb3675fa0d0)[28](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-0db79fc0218e426786cf29f0edbc85eb). As of December 31, 2024, Verizon had approximately 99,600 employees on a full-time equivalent basis, with 88% based in the U.S. [29](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-e4c26d1faf8c4115965f49f33c13bcd7).

Geographic financial disclosure is limited, but Verizon reported 2024 income before provision for income taxes of $21.253 billion domestically and $1.726 billion abroad, indicating that the large majority of earnings were generated in the U.S. [30](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-80af8d5445f94a1c927b1c22c16b1aad).

## Business segments

Verizon reports two reportable segments: Verizon Consumer Group and Verizon Business Group. Consumer covers consumer-focused wireless and wireline communications products and services, including mobile service, fixed wireless access broadband over 5G/4G LTE, and Fios and legacy wireline services in Verizon’s wireline footprint. Business covers wireless and wireline communications services and products for enterprises, public-sector customers and carriers, including FWA broadband, data, video and advanced communications, networking, security, managed network services, voice and IoT offerings [31](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-3ad4293100c14151a0b8a4109b1b23bd)[26](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=T-90b3501f2c8b4d23a45107913dca8b6a). Based on 2024 operating revenue, Consumer contributed about 76% of consolidated revenue ($102.9 billion of $134.8 billion) and Business about 22% ($29.5 billion); the remainder was mainly Corporate and other plus eliminations, with Corporate and other described as a reconciliation category rather than a reportable segment. The mix was similar in 2023, at roughly 76% Consumer and 22% Business [32](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=T-a2c76da4878749a18733f9dfa38ddcd9)[33](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=T-630dd9f7d28645c1b2cd1e710d0e3bbb)[34](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-1405cef5b5ec4874b30c87e9fddd9645)[35](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=T-b66502a613b84d229508735ee2614671)[36](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=T-fdd4f4ac459d4326b16d50026dcdad45).

Verizon also gives a more detailed operating-revenue view beneath these reportable segments. Consumer revenue is presented as Service, Wireless equipment and Other; in 2024 these were about 75%, 19% and 6% of Consumer revenue, respectively, making service revenue the dominant Consumer category [37](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=T-9418eeff423a47a99feb19342dccece0). Business is organized into three customer groups: Enterprise and Public Sector, which serves large businesses, governments and educational institutions with wireless products plus wireline connectivity and managed services; Business Markets and Other, which serves smaller business customers with wireless, FWA broadband, equipment, voice, networking, Fios and security services; and Wholesale, which provides wireline communications services to carriers. In 2024 these groups accounted for about 48%, 44% and 8% of Business revenue, respectively [38](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-d21a12985c1a4cba9a2297e64c3d65cf)[39](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-f0acd81b2dee4ac09d19d2018f6dc349)[40](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-e84d106fe4f6461eb3ea055a3aa56378)[41](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-25bb243475b94e3892982b4ed6031d26)[15](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-91f940ea9fe64e5db72d515eded142c1)[42](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-b331667c973348a0aba050ef08661d44)[43](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-4bd5c4e84f4a4762aed213f0ff930982)[44](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-a26f760ee4af4df681741147b7007fdf)[23](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=T-35c98300440742f294ddc3750fb964a4).

## Company history

Verizon’s roots lie in the 1983 breakup of AT&T, which created Bell Atlantic as one of the regional Bell operating companies. Bell Atlantic then agreed to merge with NYNEX in 1996, and that combination was completed in 1997; Bell Atlantic later merged with GTE on June 30, 2000 to form Verizon Communications Inc. [45](https://www.verizon.com/about/sites/default/files/Major-Events-Overview-0.pdf)[46](https://www.verizon.com/about/news/press-releases/bell-atlantic-and-nynex-agree-merger-equals)[47](https://www.verizon.com/about/sites/default/files/Verizon_Corporate_History.pdf) In 2000, Verizon also established Verizon Wireless through the combination of Bell Atlantic’s and Vodafone AirTouch’s U.S. wireless businesses. [47](https://www.verizon.com/about/sites/default/files/Verizon_Corporate_History.pdf) In the mid-2000s, Verizon began a large-scale fiber build with the rollout of FiOS and broadened its enterprise communications business by completing the acquisition of MCI in 2006. [48](https://www.verizon.com/about/news/press-releases/verizon-historic-first-begins-largescale-rollout-advanced-fiberoptic-technology-keller-texas-deployment-announces-plans-offering-new-services)[49](https://www.verizon.com/about/sites/default/files/worldcom/index.html)

Verizon continued to expand its wireless scale in 2009 with the acquisition of Alltel, and in 2010 Verizon Wireless launched a large-scale 4G LTE network. [50](https://www.verizon.com/about/news/verizon-wireless-completes-purchase-of-alltel-creates-nations-largest-wireless-carrier)[51](https://www.verizon.com/about/news/vzw/2010/12/pr2010-11-30a) A major structural milestone followed in 2014, when Verizon completed the purchase of Vodafone’s stake in Verizon Wireless, giving it full ownership of the business. [52](https://www.verizon.com/about/news/verizon-completes-acquisition-vodafones-ownership-stake-verizon-wireless)[53](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-417f72cf64df4fa981e92aa5a4bcc230) Verizon then moved into digital media through the acquisitions of AOL in 2015 and Yahoo’s operating business in 2017, later combining those assets under the Oath brand.
