## Company history

Unilever was formed in 1930 when the British soap maker Lever Brothers and the Dutch margarine producer Margarine Unie combined, following a merger agreement signed in 1929. Its roots include William Lever’s soap business and the Dutch margarine businesses of the Jurgens and Van den Bergh families. The company expanded beyond its original soap and margarine operations into foods, beverages and personal care; its acquisition of Lipton in 1972 added a major tea business.
