## Company history

The company’s roots run to 1853, and the Travelers brand itself was founded in Hartford in 1864, when James G. Batterson organized what became Travelers Insurance.[42](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-2960b1be52ac4072aa69e4cbfea2b853)[43](https://www.travelers.com/about-travelers/travelers-history) Over the following decades, Travelers became known for pioneering new forms of accident and casualty coverage, including early automobile insurance and the first airline flight accident policy in 1919.[43](https://www.travelers.com/about-travelers/travelers-history)

In the modern era, the company’s structure changed several times. Primerica agreed to acquire the rest of Travelers in 1993, and Travelers Group then merged with Citicorp in 1998 to form Citigroup.[44](https://www.upi.com/Archives/1993/09/23/Primerica-to-merge-with-Travelers-in-42-billion-deal/8130748756800/)[45](https://www.federalreserve.gov/boarddocs/press/bhc/1998/19980923/19980923.pdf) Travelers Property Casualty was separated from Citigroup in 2002, then merged with The St. Paul Companies in 2004 to create St. Paul Travelers.[46](https://www.businessinsurance.com/citigroup-completes-travelers-pc-spinoff/)[47](https://investor.travelers.com/newsroom/press-releases/news-details/2004/St-Paul-Travelers-Merger-Complete/default.aspx) In 2007, St. Paul Travelers adopted the name The Travelers Companies, Inc. and brought back the red umbrella as its primary brand symbol.[48](https://investor.travelers.com/newsroom/press-releases/news-details/2007/St-Paul-Travelers-To-Change-Company-Name-To-Travelers-And-Bring-Back-Iconic-Red-Umbrella/default.aspx)
