## Company history

Alfred I. duPont began acquiring timberland in Northwest Florida during the 1920s. After his death in 1935, executor Edward Ball incorporated St. Joe Paper Company in Florida in 1936 to pursue duPont’s plans for a paper business. [6](https://www.joe.com/about) [1](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P3893797)

St. Joe expanded beyond paper and timber with its 1961 acquisition of the Florida East Coast Railway and, later in the 1960s, the acquisition of Florida Talisman’s sugarcane operation. In 1982 it established a Real Estate Division; the 1996 sale of its Port St. Joe paper mill marked a significant step in its shift toward real estate. [6](https://www.joe.com/about)

On October 9, 2000, the company completed a pro rata spin-off to shareholders of its approximately 54% interest in Florida East Coast Industries. In 2015, Jorge Gonzalez became president and CEO, succeeding Charles A. Gehringer. In 2024, following Bruce R. Berkowitz’s retirement from the board, Gonzalez was appointed chairman and Howard S. Frank became lead independent director.
