## Business segments

Sasol’s FY2026 report identifies six reportable operating segments. Based on each segment’s external turnover as a share of consolidated turnover of R272,118 million, the approximate contributions were: Fuels, 44.9% (R122,075 million) [28](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=T18883411); Chemicals Africa, 22.0% (R59,862 million) [29](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=T18883413); Chemicals Eurasia, 15.4% (R41,889 million) [30](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=T18883417); Chemicals America, 14.8% (R40,290 million) [31](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=T18883415); Gas, 2.9% (R7,998 million) [32](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=T18883409); and Mining, less than 0.1% (R4 million) [33](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=T18883407). These percentages are calculated against consolidated turnover [34](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=T18883389).

Fuels covers the liquid-fuels business and marketing to wholesalers, retailers, end-users and export markets [35](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P162317849). Chemicals Africa includes Base Chemicals and Differentiated Chemicals, with products such as polymers, fertilisers, explosives, methanol, ammonia, gases, solvents and specialty chemicals [8](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P162317854). Chemicals America and Chemicals Eurasia are the two geographic segments of International Chemicals, which includes Base Chemicals and differentiated businesses [36](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P162317855)[9](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P162317858). Gas sells gas through direct sales and marketing arrangements; Mining supplies coal, primarily for internal use [37](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P162317848)[38](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P162318029).

The report also groups Mining, Gas, Fuels and Chemicals Africa within the Southern Africa Energy and Chemicals Business, and Chemicals America and Chemicals Eurasia within the International Chemicals Business; these are broader groupings rather than additional reportable segments [39](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P162318386)[40](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P162318453). The report’s segment structure reflects how management organizes the businesses to assess performance and make operating decisions [41](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P162318384).

## Company history

Sasol’s origins date to a 1927 proposal to investigate producing oil from coal in South Africa. It was established on 26 September 1950 as a government-sponsored corporation, and construction of its first plant at Sasolburg began in 1952. The plant produced its first synthetic crude in August 1955, followed by commercial-scale petrol later that year. [42](https://www.sahistory.org.za/dated-event/energy-and-chemical-company-sasol-registered)[43](https://sasol.com/celebrating-our-heritage)[44](https://www.sasol.com/sasol-produces-15-billion-barrels-synthetic-fuel-coal-fifty-years)

The company expanded its coal-to-liquids operations with Sasol Two and Sasol Three, completed in 1980 and beginning production in 1982, respectively. Sasol listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1979 and on the New York Stock Exchange in 2003. Around the turn of the century, it pursued international growth through the Sasol Chevron venture, acquired German chemicals company Condea in 2001, and developed the ORYX gas-to-liquids venture in Qatar, which produced its first final product in 2007. [45](https://www.sasol.com/historical-milestones)[46](https://www.sasol.com/jse-listing)[47](https://www.sasol.com/investor-centre/shareholder-information)[48](https://www.sasol.com/sasol-considering-disposal-its-olefins-and-surfactants-os-business-excluding-its)[49](https://www.sasol.com/oryx-gas-liquids-ltd-qsc-news-release-0)

In the 2010s, Sasol diversified further into North American shale gas, agreeing to acquire a 50% interest in the Farrell Creek assets in Canada in 2010. It approved its Lake Charles Chemicals Project in Louisiana in 2014; the project’s final major polyethylene unit entered beneficial operation in 2020. That year, Sasol also agreed to sell a 50% interest in the project’s base-chemicals business to LyondellBasell as part of its debt-reduction response.
