## Company history

National Bank of Greece (NBG) was founded on 30 March 1841, associated with Georgios Stavros and the financier Jean-Gabriel Eynard; Stavros became its first governor. The bank’s shares have been listed since 1880. In 1928, when the Bank of Greece began operating, it assumed responsibility for issuing banknotes, a role NBG had previously held. [32](https://ha.nbg.gr/el/explore/ha-archives) [33](https://www.nbg.gr/en/group/activities/our-history) [34](https://www.bankofgreece.gr/en/the-bank/history)

NBG merged with the Bank of Athens in 1953 and restored its National Bank of Greece name in 1958. It absorbed National Mortgage Bank in 1998, then expanded into Southeast Europe in the 2000s, including acquiring Finansbank in Turkey. In 2013 it took over specified assets and liabilities of First Business Bank and Probank during Greek banking-sector consolidation. NBG completed the sale of its Finansbank stake in 2016.
