## Company history

Founded by brothers Laurence and Preston Robert Tisch, Loews traces its business roots to a 1946 hotel investment in Lakewood, New Jersey. In 1959, the brothers acquired a controlling interest in Loew’s Theatres, and in 1968 they acquired Lorillard Tobacco Company. Loews was incorporated in 1969; it acquired a majority interest in CNA Financial in 1974. The company later shifted its portfolio through acquisitions and exits. Texas Gas Transmission and Gulf South Pipeline were acquired in 2003 and 2004, respectively. Loews exited its remaining Lorillard investment in 2008, and Citizen completed its acquisition of Bulova from Loews that year. Loews Cineplex also passed to new ownership in 2002. Loews agreed to acquire packaging company Consolidated Container Company in 2017 and completed its purchase of Boardwalk Pipeline Partners’ remaining common units in 2018, consolidating its ownership. Consolidated Container was renamed Altium Packaging in 2020. James S. Tisch, CEO from 1999, became chairman at the start of 2025, when Benjamin J. Tisch succeeded him as CEO.
