## Company history

Investec was founded in Johannesburg in 1974 as a finance company by Stephen Koseff, Ian Kantor and Bernard Kantor. It expanded into banking in 1980 after obtaining a banking licence, then merged with trust company Metboard in 1986. [21](https://www.investec.com/en_za/welcome-to-investec/about-us/our-history.html)[22](https://www.investec.com/en_za/focus/beyond-wealth/the-investec-story.html)

The group began expanding internationally with its 1992 acquisition of London-based Allied Trust Bank, followed by its 1998 acquisition of Guinness Mahon Holdings, which extended its UK presence. In July 2002, it implemented a dual-listed company structure linking its London- and Johannesburg-listed companies. Investec acquired the remaining shares in UK wealth manager Rensburg Sheppards in 2010. In 2018, Fani Titi became joint Group Chief Executive alongside Hendrik du Toit; Titi became sole Group Chief Executive in March 2020, the same month that Investec Asset Management was demerged and listed separately as Ninety One.
