## Company history

Samih Darwazah founded Hikma in Amman, Jordan, in 1978 as a medicines manufacturer. During the 1980s, the company expanded across the Middle East and North Africa, established a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant described as the region’s first to be inspected by the US FDA, and began developing injectable-medicine manufacturing in Portugal. In 1991, it acquired US-based West-Ward Pharmaceuticals, entering the US market; in 1996, its Jordan plant became the first site of an Arab pharmaceutical company to receive US FDA approval.
