## Business segments

Bank of Ireland Group reports five operating segments based on its internal management and resource-allocation structure: Retail Ireland, Wealth and Insurance, Retail UK, Corporate and Commercial, and Group Centre. Retail Ireland covers day-to-day banking services, products and financial wellbeing delivered through branches, ATMs, digital channels, contact centres and a post office partnership; Wealth and Insurance includes New Ireland Assurance, Davy wealth management and capital markets, plus protection, investment, pension and insurance brokerage activities; Retail UK includes UK residential mortgages, the Northern Ireland branch network and business banking, asset finance and contract hire, vehicle leasing and fleet management, and UK Post Office partnership / foreign-exchange joint venture activities; Corporate and Commercial provides lending, banking and treasury risk management services to corporate and business customers in Ireland and the UK, plus certain niche international businesses; and Group Centre comprises central support and control functions, customer strategy, governance, management services and IT platforms. The group also reports “other reconciling items,” but these are not a reportable operating segment.[39](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-43e08c17339641ae8a1f6e761b651c1f)[40](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-3d37169bfe69474fb1ae52b7cb80012f)[3](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-336f47ee0add434f9f8528410da0f0bf)[5](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-78a8c6cc6d1a4378bccbf6f617a099a5)[41](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-9410299f0a10472abe364194bee746ff)[42](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-731aa8e7b50f4f6e8e8857e9e221df26)[43](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-1e1a7d0119104ba39bdb0a966a2a7a29)[44](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-54d31d6f008046a5a4b692ea811402f3)

On a 2024 underlying operating profit before impairment basis, Corporate and Commercial was the largest contributor at about 60% of group profit, followed by Retail Ireland at about 49%, Retail UK at about 13%, and Wealth and Insurance at about 5%; Group Centre and reconciling items were loss-making, so the positive segment shares sum to more than 100%. On a 2024 total operating income basis, Corporate and Commercial contributed about 42% of group income, Retail Ireland about 37%, Retail UK about 13%, and Wealth and Insurance about 8%, with Group Centre and reconciling items slightly negative overall. This makes Bank of Ireland Group primarily a two-engine segment structure in earnings terms, with Corporate and Commercial and Retail Ireland generating the large majority of reported segment income and profit.[45](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=T-adcebf5c4fa94d86aac01c9cf5853323)

## Company history

Bank of Ireland was established in 1783 by Royal Charter and first opened in Dublin at Mary’s Abbey. It began issuing its own banknotes in 1784, bought the former Irish Parliament building in 1803 and opened it as a banking hall in 1808, and expanded domestically by opening seven branches in Ireland in 1825.[46](https://www.bankofireland.com/about-bank-of-ireland/about-the-group/bank-of-ireland-history/)[47](https://personalbanking.bankofireland.com/about-bank-of-ireland/about-the-group/company-overview/)[48](https://www.bankofireland.com/about-bank-of-ireland/press-releases/2023/bank-of-ireland-granted-planning-permission-for-e36m-college-green-investment/) After independence, Bank of Ireland was appointed the official bank of the Irish Free State in 1922, and in 1926 it acquired the National Land Bank and renamed it National City Bank, Ltd.[46](https://www.bankofireland.com/about-bank-of-ireland/about-the-group/bank-of-ireland-history/)

The group extended its presence in Great Britain in 1971 with its first branch there, and it significantly expanded its UK operations through the 1997 acquisition of Bristol & West; the Bristol & West plc business was transferred into Bank of Ireland in 2007.[49](https://www.bankofirelanduk.com/about/about-bank-of-ireland-uk/history/)[50](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-0dfc54c4b3cc40c8b9adb09b6b75d889)[51](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-71f296b06c3e48b9b68a3c0d6d418cb1) During the post-2008 banking crisis, the group received support from the Irish State in 2011, repaid government preference shares in 2013, returned to profitability in 2014, and in 2017 reorganised so that Bank of Ireland Group plc became the listed parent company of the group.[46](https://www.bankofireland.com/about-bank-of-ireland/about-the-group/bank-of-ireland-history/)[52](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-89ca304b5ed247109af63f83c2b29c1d)[53](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-de05678e00d7448eb8118ac7429952cb)[54](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-1a68ee61ac2c483da650832c5b7d8691)[55](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-b221d30b10434aa4b4e74e3546bcc7b7)[56](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-d812d23fc0dc4565bcc94f57500cc6c3)[57](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=P-3c3246d14e224b2fbaf9522d1c06fffd)
