The business began selling military surplus in 1939 and was renamed Academy Super Surplus in 1945. In 1973, Max’s son Arthur acquired a Houston surplus retailer, renamed the business Academy Corp., and expanded it to six stores; sporting and outdoor goods were added in 1980.
